He's feeding off tensions from someone in the house. Just stop him, don't excite him further.

I worked for a vet for 4 years and never once had we ever had a maltese nor a yorkie hush up the yapping. It's just what they do.

i have a yorkie as well. and know many people also that have them. non are "yappy". Before dismissing this as "yappy" or boredom make sure everythings ok. Is he acting normal? Eating ok? Does his stool (poop) look ok? Make sure he's not sliding his butt across the carpet (his anal glands may need squeezing (by a vet) ). Check his ears and mouth for sores or mites. He may just be trying to tell you that somethings wrong. Otherwise, perhaps he is just a yappy little fellow. In that case the spray bottle idea another person mentioned would be my first advice. use it sparingly or he will become to used to it though. The spray bottle is an effective, nonabusive and harmless way to train an animal. Try that if he seems to be ok. Good luck

Well yorkies (some) are yappy, try looking at the dog pointing and say shh! or EHH! the dog will sit, lay,or roll over, it works with any dog(ceaser says) I have had yorkies all my life, not one yapped.

He might just be yapping for attention.

If you go ahem really loud they'll stop. Or this trick where you squit them with a spray bottle when they yap and they'll stop.

I know it sounds mean, but you have to let them know that that kind of behavior isn't acceptible.

maybe he sees or hears somebody, a stranger outside and wants to alert you.
Next time, if your dog starts barking, go and see if someone is in sight. If there is, dont shout at your dog, (he will think it is your form of barking and bark back). Just make it obvious that you have seen that person and pet your dog and say 'its okay' in a soothing voice.
