I had always heard that Jesus carried his own cross. In fact there is at least one common saying based on it.

A friend of mine just told me that there is some confusion about that; he said only one passage said that Jesus carried the cross, all the others described someone else doing it.

Should I change my mental image of the crucifiction?

Simon the Cyrene helped Jesus carry His cross.

To the person who said: "If you have 2 different sources saying something completely different about an event, what does that tell you about said sources"

Do you have the slightetest idea what you are saying? Witnesses to any event will always have variences in their recounts. If anything, this helps prove the authenticity of the Gospels

Probably not my place to answer, but John 19:17 says Jesus carried his cross, while Mathew 27:32, Mark 15:21, and Luke 23:26 all say Simon of Cyrene carried his cross.

Hope it helps!

I'm sure by now someone else has suggested that you consult your bible, but just in case I will.
All four of the gospels give details of the crucifixion; I think John gives the best.
From what I recall, Jesus carried his cross about half way, then a man named Simeon, I believe carried it the rest of the way.
Let's face it, He'd been beaten within an inch of His life just a few hours before this, not to mention He'd been awake for I think about 48 hours.
BTW, you misspelled crucifixtion.

Jesus carried His own cross up to a point, when total exhaustion had it's affect, and then the Romans grabbed someone from the onlookers to carry the cross the rest of the way.

It doesn't change the fact that the innocent died in place of the guilty, or that he rose again the 3rd day.

Jesus did carry His cross, and so did another person. A man carried it a short distance for Him, but Jesus carried it most of the long way.

He did in fact carry his own cross, well more like dragging the big thing and someone did offer help.
So he did get some help, as the soldiers would allow anyway.

In the bible Jesus Carried it as far as he could and then a man from the crowd was forced to help him. The image that you should probably add is this man...forced to help another man who would have been considered a criminal, he probably wanted nothing to do with Jesus (who was covered in open cuts and probably smelled fairly bad), but he came to realize that the burden shared between people is lighter. He supported the cross and helped Jesus...because somewhere in his heart he understood that this was wrong and felt god's love.

I found this - hope it helps.

Matthew 27:24 - When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, & washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just Person
Matthew 27:31 - And after they mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, & put his own raiment on Him, & led Him away to crucify Him.: see ye to it.
32 - And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name & compelled him to bear His cross.

Mark 15:14 - Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath He done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify Him.
20 - And when they had mocked Him, they took off the purple robe from Him, & put His own clothes on Him, & led Him out to crucify Him.
21 - And they compelled one Simon (a Cyrenian), who passed by, coming out of the country, (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross.
22 - And they brought Him unto the place Golgotha, interpreted as The place of a skull.

Luke 23:22 - And he said unto them the 3rd time, Why, what evil hath He done? I have found no cause of death in Him
25 - And he released unto them him that for sedition & murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.: I will therefore chastise Him, & let Him go.
26 - And as they led Him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 - And there followed Him a great company of people, & of women, which also bewailed & lamented Him.

John 19:6 - When the chief priests & officers saw Him, they cried out, "Crucify Him". Pilate saith unto them, Take ye Him, & crucify Him: for I find no fault in Him.
John 19:16 - Then delivered Him unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, & led Him away.
17 - And he [Simon, the cyrene] bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called Golgotha:

The Bible says Jesus carried it, and then he fell and Mt 27:32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. Jesus was too exhausted and was well dehydrated to carry it all of the way.

I personally find it of non-importance, as to whether He carried the cross the 'whole way' to Golgotha or not; I'd rather focus on the fact that He was nailed to it, died, and rose again. Thus, shedding His blood and was resurrected; for the forgiveness of our sins granting eternal life to those that believe in Him.
