Usually it is powdered. The pudding will form and do what it is supposed to do in the mix when all the ingrediants (wet and dry) are combined. If the recipe calls for prepared pudding, it should say so. All the recipes I have used uses the powdered pudding mix. If your recipe calls for no other wet ingrediants, then use prepared pudding. Good luck!

Most "pudding cakes" call for a package of un-prepared pudding mix. If your recipe calls for "a cup of pudding" I would think that means prepared pudding.

I have several old cake recipes that I have updated to use cake mixes (easier to make) The pudding is prepared before you make the cake mix and chilled for about 1-2 hours prior to adding to the mix. You can also buy cake mixes that have the pudding already in the mix. It is possible to add additional pudding to these mixes but no-more then 1 cup.
