I'm editing a PowerPoint presentation and am trying to figure out how to get rid of this box-like thing behind the images in this presentation. Because I didn't create this effect, I'm not sure how to remove it.

It almost looks like there is a black box behind and slight offset from the image. Ungrouping doesn't help, so that means the box is not a separate object or image. And I don't see anything in the picture toolbar that will let me eliminate that option (it's not a border--I've already removed those). I can't crop it out, either, which means it's got to be a PowerPoint effect. Any thoughts?

Inundated in SF: No, it's not an animation. I can't grab the black box. It seems to be part of the picture itself, until I go to resize or crop the main image. Then the box resizes itself to the new picture size.

Sounds like this is a drop shadow put on the image.

Make sure you have the drawing toolbar turned on. Look to the far right side of the toolbar and there is a small green box with a shadow on one side. Hover your mouse over it and it should say "Shadow Style".

Click the button and then choose "No Shadow" from the top.

Hope this takes care of it. (PPT version 2003)

Could it be an animation/film inserted on the page? You ought to be able to click on the black box and handles should appear (and you can delete it or move it to a blank slide until you figure out what it is and whether it is needed or not).
