Personally, I lie about stupid things because I don't want people to hate me, and I think that those stupid things are way more important than they really are.

The "friend" (former friend actually) who lies about stupid things does it, I am assuming, to make herself seem more important. It also gives her a reason to gripe about things that have nothing to do with her. I believe it has gotten to be such a habit, as she lies about things that are easily checked out.
She lied about how much property tax she was paying. It is on a municipal web site that is accessible to the public. While she was telling me this lie, I logged onto it and told her exactly the amount she was paying for the year. She told me that it was wrong on the web site. She won't admit to any lie she is caught it. She doesn't even seem to be embarrassed about it. I have said to her, "Sharon, that is not true," and that doesn't even faze her.
I don't speak to her much any more. People like that are dangerous. One has to wonder when they will start putting you in their lies.

some people do it for attention, others to cover up other lies, and still others lie out of habit or as a coping mechanism. It really just depends on the person, the lie, and the reason behind it.

To be accepted, to attempt to get out of trouble, to hurt someone, for selfish gain (call in sick, fake illness or pain for meds, financial gains, etc.), to make themselves appear better than the truth, to fake relatability, to accomplish a task without having to go through all of the proper processes (pretending to be Dad to assist him in account changes), the list goes on.
It's never the right thing to do and sometimes entraps a person in their lie.

They probably want to impress by embellishing a story, bragging and it eventually becomes a habit. Or just for fun. But it's an insult to my intelligence. I hate it. Honestly!
