I'm doing a Biology project and need to know how to tell the diference between a male and female pine cone.

Male pine cones are:
.. smaller than female cones
.. found in clusters rather than single like female cones are
.. out toward the ends of the branches instead of farther from the ends of the branches

The male cone (microstrobilus or pollen cone) is structurally similar across all conifers, differing only in small ways (mostly in scale arrangement) from species to species. Extending out from a central axis are microsporophylls (modified leaves). Under each microsporophyll is one or several microsporangia (pollen sacs). The photo (right) shows mature male pine cones shortly after pollen release.

also female cones tend to be woody and males papery and fall apart easily and actually fall off the trees after they are done pollenating
