Gift cards of any kind make a really good gift for a soon to be college student. That way they can get whatever they want and/or need. I would recommend a gift card to Bed, Bath & Beyond or Linens 'N Things. If that's not your style, check out what restaurants there are around their campus and get a gift card for that.

It depends on what you want to spend. Gift cards are good, but I'd make it more general, like an Am Express gift card which can be used anywhere or a gift card for a restaurant nearby if he's in a dorm. A phone card if it's long distance....etc.

A gift card to Staples, Office Depot, Target, etc. Somewhere that sells supplies and such. He's gonna need 'em!

A planner, money, something for the dorm room, gift certificates to restaurants in the area, cookies you made yourself...

flip flops and a robe for the dorm bathrooms. Yuck!
Sheets for the dorm room. Most doems have a super twin bed.

A bed set, (comforter,sheets), small t.v., radio, alarm clock, desk lamp, gift cards for restaurants or gas, cd's, etc.

You can get him necessities like giftcards to Linen N' Things, Bed Bath & Beyond. Trust me he will blow his money on stuff like parties and drinking. lol.
