I've heard that it is really bad, but i haven't given my dog(german shepard) any yet. I just wanna know in advance in case he ever takes any in. And if it is harmful, why?

yes Chocolate is toxic to dogs. The worst a Hershey bar can do to you is add an inch to your hips. But that same candy – even in relatively small amounts – can make a dog or cat very sick. Make no mistake: For them, chocolate is poison.

In addition to a high fat content, chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two different types of stimulants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination

Chocolate can cause seizures, coma and death. Baker's chocolate is the most dangerous. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. But any chocolate, in large enough amounts, can kill a dog. An ounce of chocolate can poison a 30-pound dog, and many dogs will happily consume more than this. The symptoms may not show up for several hours (and so might make you think all is well), with death following within twenty-four hours. A dog can consume milk chocolate and appear to be fine because it is not as concentrated, but it is still dangerous.

Yes. A little chocolate might give them diarrhea, but if they eat too much it can actually kill them. I once saw a dog (Rhodesian Ridgeback) at the emergency vet who had accidentally eaten a little chocolate and the poor thing was salivating like crazy and shaking like a leaf. If your dog accidentally gets a little, he will probably be okay, but try to avoid it because it could be expensive at the vet and hard on your dog.

When my golden retriever was a puppy, she ate over 2 pounds of chocolate (we had just gotten done with a fundraiser and had all the goodies at home) and she threw up a couple times, and was fine. Since then, she's eaten zillions of chocolate pieces (off the ground; I don't feed her them!) and hasn't had any ill effects except when she eats too much. Maybe it's size or breed related...?

Yes very bad, especially for small dogs. And most dogs love it so be careful. Although with a large dog a piece or so won't hurt them. I think it effects the nervous system.

Yes, they are allergic to the caffeine and some other ingredient in it.
A piece won't kill your dog most likely, and of course according to size, it takes different amounts to affect a dog.
Grapes are also bad for dogs.

Our 13 pound mini Dachshund has on occasion gotten into chocolate and she ate a surprisingly large amount of cake once and a bunch of candy another time. It seemed to have no major effect, so I think it is over hyped a bit.

Well you can give the dog chocolate but not the dark one because it can cause seizures and blindness later on in life and you heave dogs that heave died from it too . so it's something you need to think about first before giving it to the dog , and if you do then in small amounts once in a while is OK .My dog loves chocolate give it to her once it a while .
