i have three dogs, 2 shetland sheepdogs and a great dane puppy (later today my family is getting a second great dane). the good thing is when you left the house your pets have each other to keep company and get to play in a way that you can't play with your dog. the downside is that it costs more (food and other necessities).

If you can handle this: 1} Double the Love!-That's a Pro,2] More Work!-That's a Con, 3} Company for each other! That's a Pro, 4] Added Expenses!-That's a con! 5] More Dogs Mean More Exercise!-That's a Pro, 6} Double the Heartbreak!-That's definitely a Con,7} Double the Love!- Did I mention this one already? If you are a dog lover and enjoy each and every moment of the privilege, of dog ownership, then the more dogs you have, the more joy you will experience!

Hey Monica,
I live in the country. Two dogs are more apt to wander if they are left alone outside. Seems like the "pack instinct" is worse for some reason and they run off!

Two dogs will keep each other company. Two dogs will fight for food and attention. One will be the alpha dog, the other can't be. (So, there might be a territory problem.)

Most of the dogs I've owned have been the only dog I've owned at the time. However, I have owned 4 different "sets" of dogs at the same time. The "sets" were fine except at feeding time (you probably have to keep them seperate). Other than that, they got along pretty well. Best of luck to you.

well i debated this same issue last year. we had a shih tzu and wanted another. the first thing everyone told me is to not get another male, that they fight. so we went with a female and let me tell you it was thing we ever did. they are best friends, they play together, sleep together, eat together, and they watch out for each other. those are pros. the cons are that it is twice the expense, in our case, it is 2 groomings every 6 weeks, but you just buy bigger bags of food, and since the shots are yearly, you have that expense only once a year, we schedule them at different times so we cut down on paying for 2 sets of shots at once. the dog you have will teach the new pup alot, our dog learned stairs in about a week, the first dog took 3 months.

its a great idea but just be patient, it takes some time to get used to'

good luck!!!

Having two dogs means double everything... Love, laughter, fun, joy and general goofiness.

Of course then there's food, vet, and larger messes when they get into mischief.

One is company for the other when you can't be there for them. Oddly enough this equates to less mischief because they don't get bored as easily and find trouble to get into.

However, when they are looking for trouble you have two working at it and what one doesn't think of the other one does.

But to me the only real con of having multiple dogs to love is someday God is going to want them back. When that day comes it is almost unbearable. But even with that looming over my future with my two... I wouldn't have it any other way. Having two all over me when I come home each day is what it's all about. Dogs are the worlds best at showing you just how much they love you each and every day.

The pro will likely be they have one another for company when nobodies home. The con is possible fighting. I have 2 and their together most of the time even when were home. Once in a while the older growls at the younger. A firm "No" works as it has from the beginning.

Well I had two dogs way back a Rottweiler and a Hungarian sheep's dog hehe and it was double the work , and double the cost which I didn't mind but it's just can you handle it the responsibility towards a second dog at this point it just something you need to think about and will your dog get along with the new one that's always something you need to take into consideration when thinking about getting a second dog .But other than that , that is pretty much it .

Pros:
they can be friends for each other
you get the joy of having each in your life
Cons:
Twice the cost
The dogs can relate more to each other than to the people in the house - and you lose the bond with the now singleton dog.

It gives the 1st dog a playmate... allot of times it keeps the older dog.. more play full and energetic. 2nd dogs usually potty train easier because they see the 1st dog going outside.
Remember to introduce them at a neutral spot.. like a playground. Good luck
