Melbourne - hospitals are world class. She would have plenty of hospitals to chose employment from - I know several nurses who enjoy working in both the city and country areas. If she is E.R. or maternity qualified she would definately get a job. Try the websites below.
Melbourne is more culturally acceptable to migrants, most livable city, hosts most international events (Grand Prix, fashion festival, Melb Cup, comedy festival, FINA world cup, Commonwealth Games....need I go on). Large Greek, Italian, Chinese communities (to name a few), plenty of world class universities and employment, climate is warm - to - cold (so grass actually grows here!)
Adelaide - full of drug-growers (because of local laws legalised it)
Perth - big town where only jobs are in mining areas in the desert. Has about 3 high rise buildings. Watch for sharks at beaches.
Darwin - cyclone infected, small country town - no freeways! Watch out for crocs at beaches.
Brisbane - muggy, sticky humid in summer, not very migrant tolerant, weather is ok 6months of year - more a tourist destination. Watch for poisoness jellyfish & cane toads!
Sydney - see Cronulla riots... concrete jungle, unfriendly people.
Hobart - full of convicts, very cold, very much a country town.

G'day,
If your friend comes to Melbourne, this is what she'll find:
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day in summer, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.
I certainly hope this helps. Yes, there will be some time needed for adjustments with the lifestyles and weather, but there will be helps and supports along the way since Australia is built by immigrants (yes, this include the Caucasians and the Aborigines, so I was told).
Welcome to Australia and enjoy.

I have lived in Perth, and I think it is a great city, but ... if your friend wants to travel around the country more once she moves here, then Perth is not a great base for doing that. Personally think it beats all of the other state capitals as a place to live, but it is a long way from all the other cities. There are things to see and do in WA, but the southeast corner of the country probably has more attractions within reach.
Depending on what type of lifestyle your friend likes, she may like to consider a regional centre - outside the state capitals and major cities. The cost of living will generally be cheaper there, there are shortages of nurses and doctors in many places, and she will get to see a side of Australia that most tourists miss.

Perth would not be my first choice....great place, but too far away from anything else...you feel isolated.
I would suggest somewhere alone the east coast - kinda depends on the weather that you like. Melbourne and Syndey are great and fun places. Brisbane can be hot but is quite a nice city. I'm not sure that I could live in the heat of Cairns - nice place to visit in the winter however.
One thing to think of - what type of work are you looking for. Might be a bit easier to have something in mind and look for the availability of that job while you are looking at the cities.
Have fun mate!!!

Australia is a big place, bigger than the USA or Europe. Anywhere is good but there is a lot of variation between places. Perth's main problem is that it is too far from anywhere else and it is also getting very expensive. If she is travellng round Australia she would be able to make a better decision but she should read stuff about the country first which should help her.

i currently live in sydney but woulnd definately reccomend Brisbane QLD. it is much cheaper, nicer weather, more laid back, and still plenty of fun, great beaches etc. i have also lived there and can't wait to move back. sydney is great as well, but to live anywhere decent is just getting too expensive!
