i just finished having the same thing a week ago. the best thing to do hun is to finish up ur antibiotics COMPLETELY!!!!
did ur dentist give u a pain killer? he should've cuz i know how painful it is. my meds finished within 5 days but im still with my pain killers. u see the infection there has to clear away before u do anything with that tooth...ok?
after ur done with the meds, then go to ur dentist and have him take an x-ray to see if it HAS cleared up or not. if it has, then order the root canal, if not, u may have to take more antibiotics to get rid of it.any questions? email me at femz292005@yahoo.com
good luck hun!!!!!!

I am sorry that you are suffering this problem that quite a few people have been through. I would suggest speaking with your dentist. It will take time for the antibiotic to work well enough for you to have relief from it. If the pain is bad as you say so and I know from experience that it can be down right horrible. When you speak with your dentist and do not wait until it worsens. He will be able to give pain medication. If you have taken the full course of antibiotics and you still have infection, you may require a stronger or different kind of antibiotic. My dentist told me that if infection is present it is difficult to properly numb the area until the infection is gone. I did have my infected teeth extracted, but the oral surgeon did it while I was given medication that had me sleep through the experience. I suggest that you call your dentist about the pain.

When did you start the antibiotics? You should give them at least 48 hours to work. It is going to get worse before it gets better. They should have given you some pain killers as well. I had an abcess so bad once, they drained it in the office. Try putting ice on your jaw and try not to talk as much. If after 2-3 days of the antibiotics, it hasn't gotten any better, go back to the dentist.

I would insist on the dentist seeing me again. Dentists generally will not do a root canal (or any procedure) if there's an infection (which is what abscessed tooth is). If you've been on antibiotics for more than 48 hours, and it's still hurting, you need to go back to dentist.

I don't know the best answer for that but I can tell you that I came very close to hospitalization because of an abcessed tooth. The abscess as you probably know, is a strong Infection and it can travel (through your blood stream) to the heart. This has the potential of serious threat to your life. Do not let a bad tooth get this far again. You are risking your life.
That is why they want you to give the antibiotics more time--to reduce the infection.

He needs to see an endodontist ASAP. That is their specialty. I saw 12 dentists in a month with a toothache because the endodontist waiting list was 45 days. Finally I saw 4 dentist in one day. The last one got me into the endodontist in 1 hour where he found a small canal in the tooth with a nerve in it that everyone else had missed. Of course I was on antibiotics the whole time. BTW, Amoxicillin is not a good choice unless it is combined with potassium clauvanate. That is sold as Augmentin and kills the germs that are resistant to Amoxicillin. I'm not a doctor or pharmacist.

Keep taking the antibiotics and have the root canal next week. Maybe the doctor can give you a prescription for a pain medication (or can you take Tylenol or Aleve)?

It will take awhile for the antibiotics to work. When you went to the dentist they should have drilled a hole up through your tooth to let the pressure out and to drain any puss inside it.

Go back to the Dentist and tell them you are in big time pain and you want some pain prescription medication like Vicodin which will last you for the next ten days. I've had that kind of pain before and it hurts like hell. Go back there, don't let them put you off. The vicodine works well, trust me.

the dentist can drill into your tooth to relieve some of the pressure (gas builds up inside your gums from the bacteria rotting your teeth, if you make a hole, the pressure is relieved, less pain,) but if you do this, the antibiotics will take even longer because new bacteria will constantly be getting in the open hole.
