When a child is born, Of course he/she will have to be under the direction of their parents. Intelligent parents will teach their child the best that they know. Intelligent parents will also, hopefully, teach their child the accurate truth of the bible. Sad to say that this is not aways the case.
Whatever the religion of the parents, they should always encourage the child to live in a way that would fit the description as written here : " Do your utmost to present yourself as approved to God, a workman with nothing to be ashamed of, handling the word of the truth aright." ( 2 Timothy 2 :15 )
If the parent is truly seeking to please our creator, he/she would bring the child up in this manner.

People should choose their own religion. I understand that many of us are taken to church with our parents as children and exposed to their religion. But growing up in a religion does not necessarily make it the proper religion for you. Each individual should, at a responsible age, be allowed to choose their own religion.

Each one of us is responsible for our own lives and choices. With maturity comes the end of anyone else being responsible for our life. We each stand before God's judgment who fortunately, grades on a curve, of seeing what our heart condition truly is.
It is up to us to find His true religion, worship that He approves. "The truth is out there." (X-Files)

well to be honest, I was kinda forced to accept Jehovah Witnesses beliefs. But when I turned 12, I found out for myself that this was the truth and I was thankful to my parents, even though they were inactive when I was raised, they taught me the basics and taught me Jehovah was God. I think if I was in another religion I would not like to hear what Jehovah Witnesses have to say, so I must be thankful. =]

A person should choose their own religion, not have it forced on them by family until it becomes 'the way things are done".

You should choose your own religion.
And you should listen to the voices of the Gods of your ancestors when making that choice.

I chose my own. My whole family is Christian, but I'm Atheist. I think you shouldn't teach your children anything about religion. I'll wait until they pick on their own. If my children want to be Christian, that's fine, but I'll bet if I didn't raise them that way they'll understand that Christianity doesn't make any sense.

No one should but you yourself.
We've studiously avoided the subject with our kids (despite having a mother in law who's a lutheran minister) and so far they are both solid atheists.
One kid in the neighboorhood tried to tell my son about god and jesus and my son only said "aren't you a little old to still believe in santa claus?" Just about the proudest moment of my life.

You should choose it yourself. It is no business of anyone else what (if any) religion you care to pursue. And yes, you should question things closely.

Were it possible, I'd ensure that parents could not teach anything about religion to kids before puberty. At that point, kids can choose for themselves if they want to believe something or not. Before that, it's all just brainwashing.
