Hi there. To the average viewer there is not a lot of difference between the competing formats.I will give you an explanation as to why people are confused about High Definition Video which makes it hard for them to decide what to do, just like you are asking now.Consumers aren't ready for a new High Definition DVD format if it isn't spelled out simply and delivered in a manner that isn't confusing or easily mistaken for existing formats. The only way High Definition DVD can be pushed onto consumers is to replace standard DVD. HD DVD and Blu-ray are not being positioned as replacements to DVD, they are simply an option, and one that is being largely ignored by the public despite millions of dollars being spent on competitive marketing. It's too much, too fast ,and with too little gain.

With false starts for both HD DVD and Blu-ray as well as PS3, this issue is still a state of mind for many consumers.Even those who are consistently early adopters. The back and forth claims made by both camps also doesn't do much to convince buyers that either format is positioned to take over and dominate a "new world order" of high definition media.

Sony is launching a new marketing campaign called "The Format War is Over". With this kind of ridiculous marketing (as if merely saying it, makes it true) is there any reason media and other editors around the Internet are calling Blu-ray's bluff? This is hardly one-sided as well ,with HD DVD making sweeping claims each time it can grasp a statistic that shows in its favour. Both camps are out to lunch and cannot see that all they have succeeded in doing is forming two elitist camps that cause consumer confusion and a general sense of apathy that we all have to go through such a debacle again, after so many past lessons have taught us better.

These are two competing formats for High-Definition DVDs.

They are both technically fine. Because they are competing formats there is a possibility that one or the other will soon be obsolete. The players are expensive for now.

If you don't have an HDTV, you don't need either, just buy a regular DVD.

If you do have an HDTV, you don't need either, either*. For now you want an "upconverting DVD player". This will take your standard DVDs and provide an HD-compatible signal that will look great on your TV.

*It is true that either of these player formats would look somewhat more detailed on an HDTV, but if you were the type of person that it would make a difference to, you probably wouldn't be asking this question. . .

Good luck.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are more similar than they are different. Each one offers great visuals and sound, so I don't think it matter a whole lot what you get. The thing about choosing is that many major movie producing companies back only format for all the new movies that are coming out. There are 2 studios that make movies for both. It really depends on the movies you want.

The best choice for choosing one is to buy one that will play regular DVDs, HD-DVDs, and Blu-Ray. Eventually HD-DVD or Blu-Ray will lose ground and be phased out, so for right now it's best to have a player that will play both. Those can get quite expensive, however.
