I have a 1990 gmc sierra that runs great. It is clearly marked as 3/4 ton, but I was recently told that there is no way it is a 3/4 ton because the wheels only have 6 lugs.

yes this is normal. usually 8 lug means 1 ton. although those years the 1/2 ton 4X4's had 6 lug as well

I think the other fellow is right as I seem to recall six lugs on the 1/2 ton 4WD's verses 8 on the 3/4 ton and as many as 12 on a 1 ton. The 3/4 ton rear end is very substantial in comparison to the 1/2 ton. It is bigger and uglier (not graceful) and has a very different pan or cover over the differential. The jump from 1/2 to 3/4 ton is two outter bearings on each axle shaft (four total) verses only one axle bearing per axle (total two) on the 1/2 ton. The 3/4 ton housing is larger and would hold more gear oil which sounds par for the course, too, even if it had only a twelve bolt ring gear like an older model1/2 ton.

A 3/4 ton rear end might be on a 1 ton to 5 ton application and the only difference is the number of lugs that hold the wheels to a wider spindle welded to the axle shaft and four tires (duels) verses two and more substantial brakes. They do sell 1 ton vans that only have two rear tires (truck tires vs car tires) and the same 3/4 ton rear ends.

Good Luck!

3/4 tons and 1 tons are 8 lug, 1/2 tons are 5 lug for 2wd, 6 lug for 4wd, but they also made a "heavy half" 2wd, extra frame crossmembers and 6 lugs. vin number should be able 2 tell u if its a 1/2 or 3/4 ton, take vin number 2 local chev dealer parts dept, they will look up 4 u.
