Here is a link to the TSA site that talks about what is and is not permitted on an aircraft. It is a pretty long list! lol

Even though the TSA has a list of prohibited stuff, the trained monkeys manning the checkpoints can't read. Some will confiscate stuff in some cities that will be fine in others. While everything on the list is forbidden, stuff not on the list may still be subject to getting tossed.

If you can't do without it, don't pack it. If you can afford to give it up, go ahead and put it in the little quart sized plastic bag that you gotta send through seperately.

You can take almost anything that fits in your luggage, but most airports and airlines have a list of forbidden items such as weapons, guns, explosives, knives, poisons, etc. You must declare that you are carrying forbidden items as you pass thru customs. The customs officers usually suggest to each passenger, several contraband items that some people think are not dangerous. They also ask who packed your suitcases. The U.S. airlines appear to be more careful and thorough than Euro countries. Best not to try to fool a professional customs agent.

There was a humorous story a few years ago about a US Marshall who was boarding an airplane to go pick up a fugitive that had been arrested in another state. He had filled out all the necessary forms to allow him to take his 9MM semi automatic in a shoulder holster onto the airplane as he was required to keep it with him at all times. With all the forms in hand, he got to the security checkpoint and like everyone else, emptied his pockets and handed the pistol to the security agent. They returned his gun after he passed through the metal detector but from his items that he'd removed from his pockets they confiscated his nail clippers. I guess they have to be careful what kind of weapons they allow on airplanes huh?
