No, a hobo is actually a historical term dating from the 1930s'. It refers to 'a drifter' or someone who moves around frequently...which is an accurate description of a homeless person.

What makes you think they want sandwiches?
They're not foodless - they're homeless.
You should give them a home.

I have to agree with the above poster. We homeless people are not "hobos." A hobo is (or was) a male during the Depression era who rode the rails, and chose that lifeway as a form of freedom. They live in camps called hobo jungles, and would often go from home to home, back door to back door, seeking menial work in exchange for food, or sometimes money.
Many of today's homeless are not hobos, but are, like me, victims of circumstance or illness. I have AIDS, and my work right now is not paying very well (I am an independent contractor) and I have a few evictions on my record, so I couldn't rent a home even if I could afford one, which I can't due to gentrification in the housing marketplace.
I understand you are doing this because you feel it is the right thing to do, and I have nothing against Mormons. I even own a copy of The Book Of Mormon myself. But, I feel you are doing this to feel better about yourself, and to earn your Sunday School merit badge rather than out of any real altruism.
Here's a challenge, then. Consider it a variation on your Missionary work: go down to Skid Row or a homeless shelter downtown, dress poorly, and blend in. BE one of us for a week. Just a week, that's all. See what kind of people we are. Some of us are drug addicts. Some of us are intelligent and educated, but with poor prospects. Some are crippled, or ill (such as me, I have AIDS). And some are mentally challenged. And, finally, some are there because, believe it or not, they want to be there.
Really, before you can "help" us (and sandwiches are nice, for about an hour) you really need to "walk a mile in our mocassins."

Sorry, but based on your additional edits, you have a lot of learning, not to mention growing up, to do! Hobos were drifters, but most homeless people ARE NOT! Why? Because today, you can't just hop a freight train and ride the rails, hitch hiking is too dangerous, and the airlines and busses don't have any charity seating! Most homeless people today DO NOT drift about, because to do so COSTS MONEY! Most of us stay wherever we can find a cheap room, or some other shelter.
You really need to open your eyes and stop your stereotyping of the homeless. I have no problem with you being a Mormon, but that doesn't mean there's any excuse for being bourgeois!

No I wouldn't. If you had any compassion at all you wouldn't use the term "hobos" so that tells me you aren't doing this to help them, you're doing it because either you have to or you want to make yourself look better. And go pout about being mormon somewhere else.

Let us remove some words-I would date a nice girl who is sweet and plans on helping those less fortunate.Religous background not needed. Hair color can change,Heart stays solid.
