I'm interested in buying a persian cat, I found a cute 10 week old white one but I really don't know much about them except that they are calm.
I have a 3 1/2 year old girl and a 1 year old boy and I need to know if its a good cat to get and if they shed alot of hair...
thanks!

persians shed lke crazy and require brushing at least 2-3 times a week.. their hair mats easily.

you will probably need to teach your kids to be gentle. even though my kids were MY KIDS, they had to be taught not to squeeze or fuss with any new animals.... while young animals are reslient, they can't take a beating, either.

maybe you could talk with the breeder who has the 10 week old cat and ask more questions? I'm sure they will be helpful..

i found three articles for you - the first two about caring for persians and the last about our kids and pets.

i hope you have happiness with your cat! they are wonderful animals.

I have a Persian and she is the sweetest cat ever. I hardly have to brush her because her fur is different then the other Persians I have seen. I will brush her every now and then. Your children are very young and what you should do is teach them at this age to care for a cat and they will understand once you show them what to do. Persians do shed but make sure the cat or kitten that you get is brushed a lot. It does not bother me that my cat does because I make sure she is brushed when she needs it.

Persians are WONDERFUL cats - I have two of them. But I would NOT recommend them to a family with young children like yours. They're very mellow cats and would not tolerate being pulled and poked and roughly handled by young kids. If fact, I wouldn't recommend ANY cat or kitten until your kids are a bit older and understand what being gentle means. It's quite common for small children to injure - or even kill - a kitten when they're young and don't know any better.

Persians also requite a lot of grooming - DAILY - or their coats will mat. With two small children to take care of - do you really have the time???

They make great pets. My family has one and she is our little princess. They are smart cats and very loveable and have such a personality. They do shed more than other cats. But if you brush them twice a week or so then it won't get that bad. Just be careful in the winter because if they go unbrushed their fur can mat.
They are well worth the money : )

I think its a great idea if you are willing to teach your kids from the get go how to treat animals...I have 2 little girls and my cats grew up with them, sometimes I think the cats love them more than they love me! good luck

No. You need to just get a regular tabby, if any at all. Really, you should wait three or four years, though.
