Im not a Marine, but the Army has Warrant Officers also.

Warrant Officers in any branch of service are specialist in specific areas.

Officers are considered to be generalists. We have to know as much as we can about a wide field of things.

Warrant Officers are specialist in 1 area and know everything in that one area.

For example, a Field Artillery Officer has to know about fire direction, foward observation, fire planning, counterfire, supply, artillery intellegence, etc, in both rocket and tube artillery. A Field Artillery Warrant Officer is an expert in counterfire and fire planning, but knows more in specific detail then a commissioned officer does because that is all they focus on.

To become a warrant offier in the Marine Corps, you must have at least 8 years time in service, and be a SSgt in rank. They are highly specilized in their MOS (Military Occupational Specialty), and are to be addressed as sir or ma'am.

I asked a jarhead about W"O's and was told that they have been phased out. I always thought that a WO had the best rank in the svc.
