the passenger side air bag icon means that the supplemental restraint system has made a judgement based on the size of the person sitting in the seat or the position of the person sitting in the passenger seat that, were there a collision event, that person would be in greater danger of sustaining an injury from the air bag deployment than they would be if the air bag did not deploy and they relied on the seat belt only.

does that sound legal enough? Here's what's happening. There is a sensor in the passenger seat called the Occupant Presence Detection Sensor (OPDS). The role of that sensor is to provide information on the person seated in the passenger seat. If the person is judged to be small, such as a child would be, or small, such as a shorter adult or a child would be, or if the person is seated in a way to block the deployment of the side airbag (the one on the side of the seat) by leaning against the door panel or hanging an arm out the window, then the OPDS says to the supplemental restraint system computer "we have a small person or an improperly seated passenger here" and the SRS control unit shuts the side airbag off and illuminates the icon to let you know its disabled. The airbag that is shut off is the one on the side of the seat, not the one in the dashboard.

so, if you're saying 'but wait, no one's in the seat' then look at what you have on the seat. too often people put laptop computers, grocery bags or other items on the seat that have enough weight to trip the sensor. Since the sensor detects weight but can't determine if its a person or not, the system errs on the side of safety and shuts the side airbag off.

if there's nothing on the seat then the sensor may be malfunctioning. I have seen it where people have had the front seats "shampoo'd" and the water has caused the sensor to trip the light until the seat dried out, but I doubt that's your case.

so, if its someone slouching in the seat or leaning to the side, tell them to sit upright. If its a child, put them in the back where they belong. if its a laptop computer or a grocery bag, put it on the floor. do that and the light should go out. if it doesn't, take it to your honda dealer.

there is an explanation in your owners manual of how the system works but nobody reads it because I think the explanation is under warning lamps instead of the air bag section.

hope that answers your question.
