I was just wondering this because I don't know for sure. My husband said that it does, but I don't believe that.

Collecting unemployment has no direct effect on social security benefits. While collecting unemployment, you aren't contributing to social security and thus your benefits at retirement will be reduced accordingly, but that is because you are not working.

No, not true.

You don't pay social security tax on unemployment, though, so collecting unemployment doesn't give you credits toward social security - that might be what he'd heard, or what he was thinking of.

Your husband is wrong. Unemployment is a State program and SS is Federal. They have nothing to do with each other.
