I've heard that they are the same thing from more than one person, then I've also heard they are completely different, does anyone know the different things they do?

Depends. Some people use the term interchangeably. For some people they are use to designate two different jobs at a vet clinic. If they are used to designate two different jobs, then the vet tech usually has more responsibilities, gets paid more (barely), and usually has more education. A lot of it will come down to what kind of education you have. Many vet techs will go to school to get a degree (either an Associate's or a Bachelor's). Usually, if you get a Bachelor's you then will become certified/licensed. Different states used different terminology for certified/licensed but it means the same thing. This is most often where vet clinics will make a distinction between assistant and tech, as many vet techs will will be certified and assistants will not. Here in WI, everyone who works in my wifes clinic is called a technician but some are certified and some are not. Those who are certified get paid more and have more responsibilities such as assisting with more operations, etc, while a assistant may just help handle animals during exams.
