Cats are born hunters even though they are domesticated. When they see a bird it's a adrenaline rush for them. They can't help it because it's their nature to have rushes like that when they see birds.

I have to laugh when I see my cat sitting at the window chattering away looking at a bird.

Thanks for asking.

The chattering noise--sort of a stuttery meow--is a cat practicing her killing bite. The cat wants to catch the bird (or the squirrel), and she practices how she will deliver the killing bite to the animal's neck. My cat used to do that when she was younger. She's not that interested in looking out the window anymore.

The chirp, a cross between a purr and a meow, is a signal a mother cat gives her kittens, and it can mean, come here, or it can be a sign of affection.

I had a cat that used to do that, my 2 current ones don't though. I don't know why, probably excitement or something because it wants to get the bird would be my guess.

It's a cat thing, hunting instinct. They can't get to the prey so they chatter in unconscious frustration. I think it is really interesting.

I love it when our cat makes that noise. Kind of a cross between a meow and purr. We call it his flutter. But our cat does it a ehen he is stalking something or playing with his toys or even his tail. It has to be some kind of excitement or contentment.

merely approximately all cats try this. They try this as quickly as they see something (for this reason, a poultry) that they desire, yet can no longer get to. They get overly excited and "chatter" their teeth, each from time to time making small noises that sound like slightly one goat.

I think it's their hunting instinct, because they want to get to the bird, but they can't! My cat does it too!
