I was stationed at Ft. Irwin when it made the transition from Camp to Fort, and became the National Training Center. It is a pretty good commute from the Barstow area, and Yermo doesn't offer much. You will be allowed BAH, but you may want to check out the commute you will be facing. I haven't been back to Irwin in many many years, so I am not up with the changes as far as the growth of the Barstow area, etc.
When I was there, we would get an occasional heavy rain, and it would wash out the road and we couldn't get off post for a day or so. I know the post was very spartan when I was there, and has been built up considerably since. Just check things out before you make your decision.

You will receive BAH for living off post, just like at any other post. You can rent an apartment before hand but if you are receving BAH now, there would be no major changes as far as paperwork goes, just the amount since the housing allowance is different at every post. If for some reason there is a big change, then you will have to report to post, get all settled then talk to either finance or S1 about your BAH. that could take a while, but once you start getting your BAH again, you will receive any backpay owed to you.

I personally do not know any E-5 with BAH. They have a seperate Barracks (no roomates) for E-5 and higher. I know plenty of people at Ft Irwin (I live right next to it) and honestly I dont know if you would even want to live off post its a 30 min drive to the nearest town and its kind of not a GREAT place to live. But thats up to you.

If you have enough money saved up to find an apartment and live for a month, then I would suggest moving into the barracks first, finding a storage unit for your things, acquiring BAH benefits and then move out into town.
Depending on how fast or slow the paperwork shuffle goes, you wouldn't want to be drowning in catch up debt by the time your BAH benefits are approved.

Barstow CA
Not sure you will get much in response on this. As you know if there is room for you BAH may not come thru.
I have driven thru Barstow many times on the way to Vegas or Phoenix. Looks like El Paso but not as metropolitan.
I would look at rents in the area online before you get a place without BAH. Barstow is out there but it is still CA, the land of high rent.
Good Luck

I have never been to Irwin, but it depends on the availability of adequate on-post housing for E-5s. A situation that varies from installation to installation. Contact their housing branch.
