The woman was waiting with her kids in the seating area. Her 4 year old son crawled into her lap, pulled out her breast and started nursing. Her breast was openly exposed. She didn't seem the least bit phased by it.

Was it wrong because the son is so old or is it wrong b/c she didn't cover up her breast?

Most nursing mothers realize that for modesty's sake they should not allow their breasts to hang out when they are in public. It is simply rude and not appropriate to do so in a restaurant. She should have at the very least covered herself with a blanket so as to not expose herself.
My personal opinion on breast feeding a 4 year old ,is that it is way too long. If a child can speak and is mobile then he is certainly old enough to drink from a cup. Yes, breast feeding is not only for nutritional purposes for an infant, but also for soothing and security. A four year old can use a blanket or stuffed toy if he
really needs it and he no longer needs the nourishment that breast feeding supplies. In general, I think most people in America would find it inappropriate for a mother to publically breast feed a child who was over 2 1/2.

There are decency laws the woman may have violated because she was in public. The manager has a responsibility not only to the woman but also to the other customers.

If even one other customer can find something disturbing/odd about the situation (as you did or else you wouldn't have posed the question) then it's the manager's discretion.

Being understanding of one person's needs and being understanding of the general public's needs sometimes comes in conflict. That's where maturity and responsibility come in handy.

The manager was right in asking her to stop. If had been sitting near the woman I most likely would have asked the manager to tell her to stop. If she was covered up. I wouldn't have such a problem with it. and a woman should NOT be breastfeeding a child at four years old. That is wrong. and needs to be stopped.

Absolutely the manager was right. That is just ridiculous. What is this world coming to? First of all a 4 year old should have long ago been off of the breast and she should be thrown out for doing that in public. I don't care how wonderful or beautiful of a thing it is, you don't do it in public. That is what the bathrooms are for. Sick, just sick.

I would say both.
I have breastfed 6 children, and would always cover up IF I had to bf in public. As far as the 4 year old thing. People do bf for that long. I personally thinks its too long.

It was probably "wrong" because she was exposed. But look at this way: the child needs to eat as well. However, she could have been asked to cover up vs. to stop. People may think he's too old, but that is nobody's business except the mother's. So in that case, I don't think it was right for her to have been asked to stop. Covering up would be acceptable.

As a mother who doesn't care if people breast feed or not I think its because she was exposed. Do it discretely it does make MANY people in society uncomfortable. Now as for the child being 4 its a bit old to be nursing in my opinion he no longer needs to get nutrition from mom. Maybe she's a pervert..lol jk

the manager was right to ask her to stop...it's uncomfortable for other people in the restaraunt to see that..if she is going to do that she should go sit in the car or at the very least cover up...she needs to be considerate of those around her....
plus if the kid really was 4....and this is just my personal opinion, the kid is to hold to be nursing!

first of all ........breastfeeding is great if the child is under 2..... over that there is a problem.... secondly she should have covered herself or excused herself.... thirdly if i was the manager I would have asked her to leave....

that lady has some issues...
