"Go down the hall" - the use of "down" here means away from you, not physically downwards.

Because that's the only way people in America can phrase things. We never take the time to think about what we say.
Like when we say, I have to go take a Dump. Why do we say that. We are not taking it anywhere ,,we should say I'm going to go leave a dump,, right?

Yes, the meaning is not correct but I guess people just got used to including the verb "down" when giving directions.
