I want to buy a really good surge protector, but I need it for my dorm room. This means that I'll need to plug in a laptop, fridge, microwave, LCD TV and misc. stuff in it. Which one would be best?

At the store they recommended a monster surge protector for my TV, but didn't say anything about the laptop. It almost seemed as though monster was for audio and video, but not for laptops and fridges?

I hope to spend $50.00 or less, but I honestly just want the best way to protect all of my equipment. It was expensive, and it's worth it to save it. Thanks for your answers!

EDIT: I have also heard about APC surge protectors? Are they better than Monster ones?

You should consider skipping sizing your surge protector for the fridge and microwave -- the microwave is cheap and easy to replace. The fridge is relatively immune to surges, at least the fast ones a surge protector is guarding against. If those are fried in a dorm room, then you'll probably be worrying about something bigger than your appliances (i.e. natural or man-made disaster).

A good UPS, as was mentioned, is your best choice, since it will allow you to smoothly shut down anything you have on if there's a power interruption. APC is an excellent brand; I've used them for years. But one big enough to handle a fridge and microwave and laptop, etc., would be very large and expensive (that's why I suggesting leaving the fridge and microwave off the protector -- it'd probably cost more than the replacement appliances).

I recently had to have my motherboard replaced because of a power surge. My repairman recommended the APC. It costs about thirty dollars.

A surge protector only works once, and there's no way of knowing if it's already done that. Save your money and buy beer.

MAke sure what ever one you get has a connected equipment warranty for what you will hook to it. a UPS would be a better idea.
