You'll need a coffee machine or you'll have to use instant coffee (some of which is passable, but never very good).
I like the Senseo machine for single cups of coffee. The guys here won't help keep the machine clean, and clean water and a clean coffeemaker are essential for good coffee. So, I keep a single-cup coffeemaker in my office and I don't let anyone else touch it. If you want to make more than one cup at a time, go to any Wal-mart or similar store and get a Mr. Coffee machine... some of them are under 10 bucks. They make perfectly good coffee no matter what other people might say... you don't need an expensive machine to make good stuff. Make sure to get some filters that fit the machine, but it will probably come with a few of them in the box with the machine.
Once you have that, you will need some ground coffee, or in the case of the single-cup machines, some coffee pods. Have someone at the store show you where to find it.
Chock-full-o-nuts and plain old Folgers are the best supermarket coffees. You can spend a lot more money on coffee, but it's not that much better.

First, you buy some raw coffee beans. If you heat up an empty pan, a frying pan will be ideal, until it is very hot and put a handful of the raw beans in the pan. Keep the pan on high heat and shake it gently for around one to two minutes and the beans are now roasted. Next, you can either grind the beans, if you have a grinder or use a pestle and mortar to crush them. Now put around 1 tablespoon of coffee for every two cups into a filter, add the water to the machine and wait for the result. The coffee will be as close as you can get to traditionally made coffee. As the beans were raw, they have not been treated with any chemicals to adjust the taste. All these fancy coffees, from coffee shops have been tampered with to give them different flavours. A true coffee should have an earthy taste and be quite strong. PS - one big brand of coffee shop ( Shi*bucks ) describes some of it's coffees as "lemony" and "fruity". I know for a fact that the region that the coffee comes from doesn't even grow lemons, so where does the coffee get the lemony flavour when it has always tasted earthy to me, when I get raw beans, roasted beans and ground / roasted coffee from the source?

Use fresh cold water. I use a 1/3rd cup scoop for every 4 cups. You can adjust it to taste. If I put too much coffee in, I can smell the strong aroma and add more water before brewing is finished. It does not matter much if you use a drip maker, percolator, or press. After brewing, the coffee will have some oily shine on the top. That's what you want. It's the oils that give coffee its flavor. Good luck

A. Buy a bag of your preferred coffee beans at a coffee shop and then have them grind it for you in their grinding machine.
Take the bag home.
Then you can either brew the freshly ground coffee beans using a filter over your cup and pour the hotwater through, or you can use some kind of coffee machine you buy at any store.
B. Various coffee shops, supermarkets, or appliance stores sell all sorts of coffee making devices or filtering systems and filtering kits. The filters and kits are good for making a single cup of coffee quickly.
It can be a nice hobby to pick out your own blend of coffee beans, have them grounded, and brew your own coffee.
WARNING: Ignorance is bliss. After a life of instant and doughnut shop coffee, after my first cup of great fresh roast, I can't go back to plebian coffee anymore. I've become a coffee snob.

4 mugs of water in a pot,, as bubbles form at the bottom add 2 rounded Tbl of grounds
the water may foam up,, so add slowly
bring back to just a boil,, turn the heat off
Let steep a minuet
then pour slowly to prevent the grounds being stirred up.
a strainer might help if your fussy.
Or spend $100 for a fancy electrical monster that needs special cleaning.

Put the filter into your coffee pot in the designated place for a 12 cup coffee maker you want to put about 4-5 tbl spoons, more or less is really your preference and trial and error. Good Luck!

How to Make Coffee
It is very simple to make a great cup of coffee, you just need to learn a couple of things to move your process from just an average cup to great. Here are some tips on how to make coffee so that you will get the most enjoyment out of your gourmet coffee.
Coffee Storage
Protect your gourmet coffee from heat, light and moisture. Transfer the coffee to an airtight container, or keep it in this bag rolled tight. Store in a cool dark place or in the freezer for the best preservation.
Grinding Your Coffee Beans
Grind only as much coffee as you will need just before brewing, otherwise it will oxidize and lose its flavor. We recommend a burr coffee grinder over a blade grinder since it has more consistency. Use the proper grind for your coffee maker. A coarse grind is good for a French press, a medium grind for a vacuum pot and a finer grind for a manual drip method. For further instructions please visiting our grinding coffee beans page.
Fresh Water to Make Your Cup of Coffee
Use only fresh water as the water you use can make a great gourmet coffee bad. Do not use distilled water as it produces a flat cup of coffee. Use only fresh cold water. Bottled or filtered water from the tap is recommended.
Measure
We recommend using two level tablespoons of ground coffee for each six ounces of water. Adjust to your particular taste and don't trust the measurements markings on your drip coffee maker as they are often wrong. One of my personal coffee makers I use at home was suppose to be a 12 cup coffee maker but it is actually only 10 six ounce cups. So don't trust the coffee maker cup settings and measure out the proper amount of water and coffee to get the best taste. Some coffees are naturally weaker than others. For example Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee naturally requires more coffee grounds than others.
Brewing
Poor brewing methods has a greater impact on the flavor of coffee than does the quality of the beans. The best cup of gourmet coffee is brewed using the manual drip method, a French press pot, or a vacuum pot. Traditional electric drip coffee machines do a fine job but check out which ones are the best through tests such as the ones found on Consumer Reports. My personal favorite is the Capresso MT500 picture at the right. It is an expensive coffee maker but worth it.
Coffee can be kept warm on a burner for only 20 minutes before the flavor becomes bitter. We recommend that you only brew your coffee 5 minutes before your are ready to drink. An airtight thermos will preserve the flavor and many coffee pots come with thermos carafes. For more information visit our how to brew coffee page.
Preparing your Perfect Cup of Coffee
Many people prefer a straight black cup of coffee which gives you a full taste of the coffee variety. Using half & half creamer adds a nice rich dairy taste. Using skim milk works but requires a large amount to affect the flavor. We do not recommend using coffee flavor additives with your gourmet coffee as it disguises and greatly alters the taste. Save the coffee flavorings for the cheap grocery store coffee since it requires help to boost the flavor. However, be careful as most of these type of coffee flavors are loaded with hydrogenated oils which are not good for your health.
If you prefer a sweetener use raw sugar over the white granular to give it the full rich sugar flavor. If your are watching your calories then use Splenda. Equal and Sweet & Low are also good but in our opinion adds a bitter taste to your cup.
