Using water will keep the dust down and rinse it off the battery. If you are going to use the same battery, be sure to use a wire brush to clean the battery terminals and the cables. They also make a product that you can spray on the assembled battery connection that will help with the corrosion. You can find it at auto parts stores. good luck.

Use a little bit of baking soda dissolved in water or simply pour a can of Coca Cola on the dust, then rinse with clear water. The dust is pretty harmless; I wouldn't worry about breathing it! Good luck!

Use a mixture of baking soda and water to neutralize the acid. Scrub it with an old toothbrush. Rinse with fresh water. After it dries, repaint the damaged area. It will rust quickly otherwise. Coke is sticky and damages paint.

Coke does work as the other contributors have stated. You can also make a baking soda and water paste to neutralize the acid. Then use water to rinse away.

Believe it or not, Coca-Cola. It's one of the many extra uses that I've seen listed in e-mails @ various times. The carbonation will lift off the rust.
