good example: dwelling in a house of sin is a sin. but it wasn't on the 10 Commandments. not treating your body like a temple is a sin (ie-tatoos, piercings), but thats not on the 10 Commandments.

Yes sin is breaking the Ten Commandments.

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” Rom. 7:7

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul. Ps. 19:7

For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment. Heb. 9:27

We are judged by the Ten Commandments.

Ever told a lie?
Ever hated anyone? See 1 John 3:15
Ever lusted after someone? See. Matt. 5:27-28
Ever blasphemed?

For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

Lawbreakers go to hell.

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Rev. 21:8

This is clear and humbling. However God made a way so we wouldn't have to go to hell. Jesus (God in flesh) came to earth, lived a sinless life, and was crucified on our behalf. He rose three days later defeating death and in turn giving us an escape route from hell. But Jesus did command us to repent. That means to turn from sin to God. The perfect example of repentance is found in Psalm 51.

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:15

I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Luke 13:3

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

You see when you repent God gives you a new heart and new desires and they are desires to serve Him. As a result you are biblically born again! That my friend is good news!

The ten commandments were written in th old testament.Look at it this way...a sin is ANYTHING that you feel in your heart...not by this world's judgement...but between you God...if you go to do something and you feel it's wrong...it's a sin! Ask God daily for conviction over your life.Pray and read your bible, grow closer to him,and trust that He will let you know the direction to take and what's wrong.Plus...if you think something...you do have the chance to not do it...so don't believe that just because you think about blessing someone out you have already sinned so do it...that's a lie...God gives a chance to make the right decision and take the way out...if we do...we haven't sinned. If you think on evil thoughts constantly that's a sin.Study and pray...it's a daily journey...but He loves you!

This is why the bible says that you are to hide Gods word in your heart that you mgiht not sin against Him. There is no quick fix answer, if you are truly serious about pleasing God you have ot study His word, after all if you love Him so much why wouldnt you wanto read what He has to tell you? The bible also says work out your own salvation with fear and trmebling on the Lord so that means that God gives us basic guidelines but He also convicts us on an individual level. He may convict me of soemthing b/c He wants me to make a personal sacrafice and not doing so is win, while He may no convict you of that thing. The bible also says there is nothing new under the sun so any sin you can think of is in there you jsut have to ready His word. There is incest, homesexuality, beastiality, STD's, murder, rape, everything in God's word if you would only pick it up and see what He has to show you. Asking others this kind of question is a lil dangerous b/ biddferent people have different interpretations and different ways of getting around things that they dont like. The bible calls us as christians to read His word that we may be able to witness, that we may be able to stand against the enemy, and that we may be able to follow God's instructions for our lives and to not is a sin. So I would say your question is admirable and is great thatyou want to serve Him! But start by reading His word, that is the best way for you to know what He wants you to do and what He doesnt. Hope this helps you. take care and be blessed

PS do not isolate and take scripture out of contaxt it is important to read the whole text and ask for understanding, it is very easy for people to take things out of context. Just remember, no one is perfect and you can not stop sinning that would make you perfect and the only only one that is that is Jesus, but the only sin that is unforgiveable is blasphemy. So if you sin ask forgiveness and keep on keeping on my sister. I know you will please God! :)

The commandments are a guide, and the rest should be self-explanatory. Simple right and simple wrong. Not very hard to figure out. If you have doubts about something being a sin, then it probably is. But surely not all that people have doubts about are really sins.

Is the behavior hurting someone? Or am I hurting myself? Am I ashamed of this behavior? Ask those questions and the answer is clear.

Sin is disobedience to God. The only way for you to answer this question is to ask God and then listen for his answer.

Personally, I think that the majority of sin is an individual concept not a global concept. For some people, drinking even one beer is a sin (for example, Mel Gibson and my alcoholic brother), for others, drinking a beer with friends is not a sin. God knows what he plans for you and what is best for you...he understands your strengths and your weakensses. Only he can tell you if something you're planning to do would be contrary to his plan for you. For example, is it a sin to get married? It was for me because I didn't ask God what he thought before I did it and I chose to ignore all the warnings he gave me that I was making a mistake.

You will never stop sinning by yourself. There has only been one sinless person and they crucified HIM.

Now the proper approach is to not do the things you know are a sin and when a sin is revealed to you that did did not know about, repent and do it no more. God is in the forgiving business.

If you avoid things you know are a sin--like you mentioned in your details--then you have no reason to worry.

sin is anything against the will of God. You have to learn his will. It is a daily stepping process. All of us Christians do our best to walk it. All of us Christians fail. That is what grace is for.

I Yahchanan (John)3:4—
Whoever commits sin, transgresses
also the Laws; for sin is the transgression
of the Laws.

All 613 that Christianity does not teach you to keep.

He who commits sin is of the Devil.

Pro 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool!

No sin is worse than the others, besides Jesus cleared this subject up whilst somebody asked Him a similiar question and he gave 2 commandments. quickly (a million) Love God with each and every thing you have and (2) the "Do unto others as you desire them to do unto you" golden rule. in case you follow the two one in each and every of them it covers the different 10 commandments

Young Lady,
Christians are to follow the New Testament NOT the OLD LAW. The Old Law was replaced after the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Christ into Heaven. Sin is a transgression of GOD'S Commands. There are a number of us on this site that would be glad to study with you and assist in your Bible Studies. I appreciate that you want to follow our Savior! Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds

PS.... I read, study, and obey HIS WORD daily. Prayer is very important!

EDIT:
Kal,
When a person "drinks a beer they set the wrong example to others who are watching them. That is a sin if it causes just one person to stray from GOD'S WORD.

KJ version. Romans tells us all about sin. Moses' law was given us as a "school master" to bring us to God. The law could not be kept by man. We all fail at that task. Jesus shows us in Matt 5 that flesh man cant be perfect. Over & over HE says, "But I say unto you" making what the law required even more difficult. Why? To show us how much we fail and how much we needed for Him to become flesh and KEEP EVERY REQUIREMENT He gave in Matt 5. Because He was perfect, we are perfect in Him. If we depend upon our keeping the law for salvation, we must keep it without fault. That is what He is showing us. But He kept it for us & our belief in Him and His perfection makes us perfect as well. He is our perfection; not we ourselves. Our sin is the "sting of death" and why we die. The only reason Jesus was able to die is that He took our sins upon Himself & He didn't die in vain. Please be comforted in this fact.
