Which of these two is correct:

cooperation between European universities
or
cooperation among European universities

I know there are more than two of them but somehow the "between" version sounds better to me. However, I am not a native speaker so I might be completely wrong.
Thanks a lot for your help.

In practice, they are both correct (used it almost equally; google it and you will see).

Now, grammatically, the correct choice is "between", because between is used for relationships (like cooperation) and among for distribution rather than individual relationships, as in "there was dissatisfaction among all shareholders, the last quarter"

If you want to verify this, the Merriam-Webster dictionary explains the difference in detail, you can check it out at:

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/between

I hope this clarified your doubt.

The 2 different words change the meaning. I think between is better if you are talking about them interacting back and forth. Among leaves if more open and vague, it could be them and a third party or among their own managment.

It depends where in the sentence you use the phrase. Subjective example: He and I are the same age. Objective example: They looked at him and me. In English, it is correct to put yourself, (I or me) last. Edit: only Jen O & the Alex just above me are correct.

"among" is correct. "between" probably sounds better just because many people do not make the distinction, and therefore it is more common.

Strictly speaking, 'among' because, as you say, there are more than two of them.

"Between" is the better option.

Robin_Charlie has said exactly what I wanted to say, except that he has said it far better than I could.

since they are cooperating together, I would say 'amoung'. Sort of like 'amoungst themselves'.
