It's a weapon used for coercion when other tactics fail.

People who knowingly sin and reject God's commandments and grace will be more comfortable in hell. When they behold at the judgment day all the harm they did unto others... all the pain and suffering, and behold all the chances God gave them, and all they truth that they knew and willfully rejected for selfish reasons... and behold Jesus and His nail scarred hands... they will succumb to an endless guilt and shame that will burn for eternity. They will shrink away in guilt and be more comfortable in hell than dwelling in heaven with the righteous while all their naked shame is exposed.

God forgives the truly repentent or the innocent who die in thier ignorance. Those who know the truth and rebell and die in their sins will go to hell.

Jesus forgave the prostitutes, drunks and tax collectors who did not know better or who repented... but the Pharisees (religiously proud and hypocritical) who knew the truth and rebelled, Jesus proclaimed damnation towards them.

Hell was initially designed for Satan. Not people. But that's where they go when they die if they weren't in right standing with God. It's a punishment for all of His enemies.
And He's God, so He can do that. It's not like He's shoving anything down anyone's throat. It was never to threaten you..it was never made for you (at first...) But unfortunately...when people miss the mark...where else will He put you?
He's not going to go back on His word...and He's a fair God so....guess everyone's really got to strive after the things in life that are more important. Are people really that deadset against loving people that they have to worry about going to hell? He said His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
All He asks for people to do is Love. That's it. And people are scared out of their minds...when their given a lifetime to live right and do good (unto Him) to the point where they have to make themselves believe hell doesn't exist to temporarily appease themselves. Although- (sigh) my dear brother when I preach to you...I preach to myself. When I say there's nothing to worry about concerning not going/going.
But...I digress....
And God didn't forgive all, he gave all the choice to repent and be forgiven. He sent Christ...but not everyone accepts Him.....

hell actually was created for satan & his followers.

however, man has become followers of their flesh & of satan... not following the ways of God.

also, most people are not scripturally born again .... & Jesus said unless you are born again of the water & the Sprit, you CANNOT enter heaven.

matt. 7:13 tells us most are on the broad path which leads to hell ...

"for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat"

while FEW will enter heaven...
not many are going the narrow way ...

"Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life,
and few there be that find it." (matt. 7:14)

God does forgive if you ask ... but the sin is not forgotten.... meaning, you will have to account for your sin at the Great White Throne of Judgment.

Your sin is only remitted (like you never did it), if you are baptized in Jesus' Name ... acts 2:38 says this baptism is FOR the remission of sin (past sin ... & future sin if you repent - turn away from that sin - after baptism).

I am a open minded Christian, I believe in God, I believe in afterlife, I believe in heaven, but I do not believe in hell as other Christians do. I was raised a Southern Baptist, but my parents also taught me to explore other religions and form my own opinion. So here goes.

I believe that we live in hell on earth. We face many trails and tribulations through out are lives. We are here to learn and try to reach a state of enlightenment. We only have a limited number of years to do this and it is not possible to do in one life time. Therefore we are born again, again until we reach that state of mind.

God is loving and caring beyond anything we could understand and he would never have us suffer forever. However we must prove ourselves and grow, learn and try to reach a state of caring understanding for everything around us to appreciate an eternal life of no suffering emotionally or physically.

The Hebrews got along fine without a Hell, but the Christians found they weren't getting the converts they needed, so they invented a place of punishment for all those who would not succumb to a regular sales pitch.

Ecc 9:5
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

This scripture makes it clear that the dead knows nothing.

Because the bitter miserable puritans of the world need something to instill fear in those who would otherwise be able to follow their dreams and lead a meaningful happy life.

There is no hell. It was invented by the early church to control and manipulate people.
