I promise if you try this it will work.
Give your dog a bath in Dawn dish soap. Make sure you rinse it good. Leave no suds! Not only will it get rid of the fleas it will kill them. I raise Staffs and I give 3 week old puppies bathes in Dawn sometimes. It is non toxic and is the soap they use to treat animals that have been involved in oil spills.
Best wishes.

There is no possible way to get rid of ALL fleas exactly. I use pantene and garnier too. We are not supposed to use on dogs because of their different skin type, but I do.
Any flea medicine is going to cost money. Advantage, frontline etc. from the vets office is the best that you can do.
Make sure and shampoo and sweep your carpets too.

First you should not use human shampoo and conditioner on a dog. That is not going to get rid of fleas plus their skin and coat are different than your hair.
You said that you have tried Advantage what about Frontline? I have used both and not had any problems with fleas. You can also use a flea dip or take her to a groomer and let them dip her.

I don't think you can keep the fleas away for free.... unless you want to wait until winter because the flea season is in summer. My dog ALWAYS get fleas in the summer, we shower her every week but doesn't help. The first year we used Advantage, didn't really help, but fleas were gone because winter was coming. This year we got her frontline plus. It's more water-resistance so the med stays on her for longer. I don't suggest you to get it from petco or petsmart because they are overpriced. Get it online where the price is cheaper.
I got them here. Search for coupon I believe they have 15% off and free shipping at the moment.

If your dog is on Advantage the fleas may get on her but as soon that they bite they will be killed and you will not have an infestation.
You say you squished the fleas - did it squish easlily or did you have to "pop" it between your finger nails. Fleas have very hard shells that are not squishable between skin - so it may have been some ohter type of insect.

Yeah, i remember that episode of family guy
I think that it was a tick, not a flea, if it was black and round, then it was a tick
But, it seems that you've done most of what you need to do, but if your dog has fleas, then you will have to spend money to get rid of them
Also, fleas only spend a part of their lives on the dog, they spend the rest of it in your house, so if the dog has fleas, the house has fleas

If you have a petsmart nearby try using this link to look through this stuff it wont be expensive depending on the stuff you buy. Another thing to think about is how long it will last. Maybe use multiple porducts but make sure it is alright with the vet. Just make one simple call and maybe they will even recommend a product to use. =]
