The WHTI, which is the American law which started the confusion, is quite clear. The way this is worded is "entry and re-entry to the USA". No where does it talk about entry to Canada. That is because an American based law does not control what the Canadian borders require to come into our country.

"Entry" to the USA is when you are beginning your journey outside of the USA and need to enter the USA. eg I am in Canada and am going to the USA. I am entering the USA.

"Re-entry" is when you began your journey in the USA (ro came through it) and are returning back to the USA. eg I am from Fargo North Dakota and I am heading up to Winnipeg for some good bars. When I come back home hungover the next day, I am "re-entering" the USA.

You "can" use a passport, but it is not a "requirement". (a passport satisfies the 2 key elements the Canadian Border Guards are looking for. It has proof of your citizenship-remember you had to present your birth certificate when you got your passport? And it has government issued photo ID to prove that is you-yup...that awful picture IS you as much as you may not WANT it to be you....)

If you are a US Citizen (or Mexican or Caribbean, I believe) who is traveling to Canada via Air or Ship, you need to either have a passport, or have a receipt from the US Passport Agency that you have applied for a passport (US Citizens only for a limited time because the passport office in the US has such a backlog). This only applies if you enter Canada via air or sea.

If you drive into canada in a car, you do not need a passport right now, although this rule will change at some point in 2008 (exact date is not certain right now).

I'm providing the State Department's information on this.

If you are not a US (or Mexican, Canadian, Caribbean) citizen, then yes you need a passport for any entry to Canada.

I live on the border and travel to Canada by car several times a month and as of now you DO NOT need a passport if driving there. You do need a legal state picture id card, drivers license, military id etc. If you fly there then you need a passport. You will need a birth certificate for children too small for a pictures id card. All this will change, I think next year. You can call the border patrol with any questions.

If u r coming from the US and driving in u DO Not need one this year but after this year you will,,, because of the new rule the was a backup with passport for like months and the y made this decision to for go the required pass port for the summer if you are driving in but u will need a birth certificate and/or ID /drivers when they ask.

Other countries I DO Not Believe you can get in without one.

if you are driving from the USA to Canada No a birth certificate and maybe a photo id should be enough, however they really want you to have a passport, if you are flying then yes you need one and as of Jan 2008 you need a passport for both

coming in from other countries I'm not sure what there guidelines are check on there government/ border patrol pages but I would think you need a passport

If you are a U.S. citizen you do not need a passport to enter Canada. Starting Jan. 2008 you will need a passport to return to the U.S. from Canada. Look at I.C.E. they will explain everything about international travel.

the US govt and homeland security has messed with your mind!!! if u are a citizen of the us no you do not need a passport and in complete honesty ur drivers license will get u in!!!!!!(until next summer) I went across with my drivers license ( a new one with both photos, counterfit proof) I had no problems and had a wonderful time(by the way I AM CANADIAN, I went into the states where all these cross border crossing questions began!!) and had no problems. if you have concerns call your local border crossing or google it and find ur answers.
