That's an easy one to answer! They can't find natural actors / actresses nowadays. During the 60s and 70s, an actor / actress had to learn his / her lines before filming. Today, the lines are learnt during the filming. Every time there is a cut, the actors quickly look up their next lines. In some cases, lines are written down for them. Some (most US) programs are even made using autocue. TV companies did not like to waste expensive film during the 60s and 70s but in the 90s they would use over 20 hours of film for one 1/2 hour episode, the rest was wasted by bad acting, poor acting and foolish behaviour from the actors / actresses. If they were made to pay for the wastage, they would have learnt their lines better. Today, we now have DVD technology and this will only encourage more bad acting. Maybe, if the BBC got rid of all those overpaid and underworked actors / actresses, they may be able to afford better ones, at less cost and start producing more good programs. I mean, they could save £30,000+ just by keeping Wogan away from the cameras on Children In Need night. It's outrageous that he demands such a high figure to help raise money for charity. Take Wogan's fee and then add everybody else's fee + all the expenses for flying camera crews etc. around the world. It probably means that the first £1 million or £2 million that is donated has already been spent and not a single child has had a sniff of a single penny. I agree, we need more programs like The Avengers, R & H Deceased etc. they certainly beat watching the over violent programs that they make today. Lastly, I don't know if you have watched "Life on Mars" or not but that program is the nearest they have been to the quality of the 60s and 70s. It was really entertaining and it had the entertainment value that most programs don't have. One other point, I hate hearing people laughing and clapping during a show. The Americans laugh at sit coms because they aren't inteligent enough to realise that they use cue cards in studios, even when they accidently put a camera on a guy holding a sign up that reads "LAUGH!" I find nothing to laugh at, nothing funny is said or happens. Sadly, this sort of entertainment has come to the UK. It sh!ould be banned

it's party to do with age.. not being funny .. we do look back at some things with rose tinted glasses..
theres a lot more to grab out attentions now, back then it was 3 channels etc. not 48975948759 of them
i would disagree about tv programmes today, in the sense of the budgets aren't there..
things of late..
life on mars
phoenix nights
dr who (yer i know purists would moan)
all have been good.. notice 2 of them are made by the bbc.
also the problem is, they have run out of idea's , had to happen sometimes..
go watch a film.. it's a wonderful life.. it was made in ermm 1946 and for me didn't feel dated even though its so old.
somethings are timeless others date rather badly.
randall and hopkirk i used to like, my friend was named after jason king.. although i've never seen that.. department x or something?!?!

Better trained actors and better writers too. Today its all about selling the product at the greatest profit, which ordinarily involves the shock factor of sex, violence etc - those days the emphasis was on quality. I love how the jokes are still relevant today - shows you that people had sardonic, sarcastic humour in those days too - perhaps they just were a little less harsh at who they directed it at?

It's because they put too many reality shows on. they would rather spend money on wanabe's then do really good tv programes
That and all the chat shows and Jeremy Kyle type shows and the soaps on every day it doesn't leave much room for anything else.
They also put too many repeats too many times so even if you do have lots of channels there isn't that often anything new to watch.

because the writers, and directors have too much imput into it
e.g Charlies Angels, good back in the 80's, rubbish Hollywood remake
plus all the stunts and the like, were done in person, knwo it is a Blue screen and CGI's

I don't suppose there's any reason why they don't make programmes of this quality these days really,In twenty or thirty years every one will be saying the same about todays programmes.
