My 13 year old cat has battled skin problems for years. I have brought him to several vets who all tell me he does not have mange (which I really thought he did) and that he has allergies.
We are battling fleas in our driveway and he is the only one of 3 cats who is scratching himself raw. Over the years I have tried the vet dip which did him no good (from different vets over a few years) also did the frontline which only lasts him about 2 weeks then he is scratching and pulling his hair out again. Tried flea collars - all kinds of brands - did nothing. One vet put him on a pill - didn't do anything either. This is awful for my cat to live like this, the only thing over the years that works is powdering him every 2 days with flea powder. I suspect the powder not the chemicals is what helps him. Can you offer some advice?? I am wondering about putting a beeswax salve on him perhaps with neem to see if that helps him to get away from the chemical powdering. He cannot stay inside, either

Have you tried brewers yeast? A quarter teaspoon over the food every day for a week then every third day after that can make your cat taste too bad for the fleas. Do NOT use garlic, dogs can take garlic for fleas, but it's toxic to cats. Just use the brewers yeast.

A few cats are allergic to brewers yeast, but it's worth giving it a try, yours sounds like he's very sensitive to flea bites and he does need relief.

The Frontline did work, but it is not a flea repellent, only a flea killer. The egg and flea infestation in your home and your yard still affect your cat. To truly defeat the fleas, Frontline (or Advantage) must be applied to ALL your pets every month. To hasten the results, boarding your animals for a day or two so you can bug-bomb your home and spray your yard is also helpful.

Expecting immediate results for a problem that is literally ingrained in every fiber of your cat's environment is a little bit naive, and your vet should have educated you on this. Were it my pet and my home, I would return to the Frontline treatments every 4 weeks on ALL animals, and I would bomb my house and spray my yard, and encourage my cat to transition to an indoors-only cat, where the flea population can be better controlled.

Sounds like a flea allergy, your vet can treat him for allergies, it's a pill which i assume is like an anti-histamine, have a chat with him with that suggestion and see how it goes.
