We recently adopted a kitten from the local animal shelter and after a few weeks our other kitten's eyes began to squint and eventually became inflamed and red. Int he morning they are practically glued shut from the excessive fluid. The vet gave us some eye drops and I use some eye wash to clean his eyes. The drops seem to have little effect. What is the best way (i.e. over the counter treatment) to treat this problem??

Eye problems are caused by usually two things, the calci virus or the herpes virus.

The calci virus needs an antibiotic ointment and takes a few weeks to clear up, but you can try Lysine right away, which worked wonderfully for the herpes virus.

A cat dose is 250mg powdered and put over the food once a day till the eyes are cleared up--you can see huge improvement in 4 or 5 days if your cat has the herpes virus doing this to him. It's safe for cats and you can buy it at the vitamin section of any grocery store. Don't get the gel caps, they taste awful, just get the pill form and crush it with the back of a spoon. Our FIV positive cat gets this when his eyes start getting runny and it clears him up. The pill is too big for any cat to swallow, so crushing it over the food is the best option. Lysine (it's also called L-lysine) sells in generic form for about $4 for 60 pills. It won't conflict with any other medication and you can't overdose because the body gets rid of what it can't use.

Use a hot, wet washcloth to hold over the eyes without pushing down, to help get the gunk softened up. Then carefully use a wet corner of it to brush the closed eye from center to outside, helping it to clear the crud out. Be gentle with this, and keep the washcloth warm to hot, it'll feel like their mother's tongue helping them and make it easier for you than if you use cold water.

You can call the vet and ask if the eye drops are for the calci virus or just a general treatment. There's a test they can do to see which is causing the problem in your cat, so you can get the right treatment.

Cats usually heal themselves. Try tea bags, they will help reduce the swelling and help it to heal. Just make sure you don't get any tea in the eye itself, just pat it around the outside. Amazingly, our cat had a nasty eye infection for 3 days and by the 4th day it ws completely gone. The next day it appeared in the other eye and was gone again within 24 hours. I wouldn't stress too much, but if it doesn't heal itself, vet is the best way to go.

The same thing happened to my kitten we adopted from the shelter. We have the goopy liquid I have to put in her eyes three times a day as well as antibiotics administered twice a day. The vet says it is an upper respiratory infection (I guess more commonly referred to as kennel cough) I wouldn't try getting new meds, but perhaps a new vet. My kitten's eye seems to be improving, but I have to continue with the eye stuff for seven days and the antibiotics for 10 days.

The eye is a very sensitive tissue. I suggest you take it to your vet and have further testing done. The cat might do well with antibiotics. I just went through an eye problem with my cat and she did better with the drops that were prescribed to her after a while. My vet stated if the drops did not work he would start her on the antibiotics.

Your cat may just have a cold. But to make sure it's nothing serious, take to a different vet and get a second opinion.

You really need to take your cat to the vet, it may have an eye infection and be in need of antibiotics.

talk to your vet and tell them that this treatment is not working and we need to look into something else.

I would suggest that you go to walmart go to the supplement isle and get some l-lysine and give your cat 500mg of that every day. that will help.
