Firstly hope you are ok!
i would interpret your dream as a revenge dream on your assailant.
Your sub-concious has manufactured a scenario where you are able to exert power (revenge) in a safe mode ie a friend (but faceless so not an actual person)
then feelings of guilt make you hide your revenge (because you are a good person)
It is a way for you to rationalise your anger without it happening in reality.
Good Luck!

According to Dreamcrowd:
Dreaming that you or someone else is killed or in danger of dying. This type of a dream experience is usually very frightening, and at times people are awakened from their dream due to the fear. This dream may have several different explanations and the catalysts may be forces from either within the individuals emotional and psychological makeup or circumstances on the outside of the individual. The death is either due to internal forces or an external situation. The dreamer may experience great difficulties when it comes to free self expression. They may have difficulties in expressing their fear, anger, love, or any other powerful emotion and are literally choking on them in their dream. Choking in your dream suggests that you are having problems in communicating your thoughts, needs, and feelings. Additionally, smothering may imply that the dreamer can not accept certain situations in their life and is feeling suffocated by a current problem. To interpret this dream accurately consider all of the details in it, think about your daily life and those things that cause you great stress and restrict your freedom. Finally, try to connect your dream with your daily life experiences and unlock the symbolism that the dream holds for you.

I can imagine you were very scared, our own minds have some interesting mysteries .... but I'm guessing that it was just your subconscious processing the real life physical assault you had the night before, and trying to make sense of your own emotions in relation to it. I'm guessing you are angry at being assaulted, and in your dream take out this anger on someone else. It's a form of release, perhaps?
It's only a dream, love, just your subconscious trying to make sense of what happened to you in real life. Don't worry about it.

This is going to sound weird, really really weird, but, before you go to sleep, ask yourself out loud "who was the girl i suffocated in my dream?" and ask it out loud three times. Then when you close your eyes, say it again in your mind. It might take a few attempts, but you'll get your answer.

I am sorry about the horrible experience you went through in your real life--although nightmares are common reaction to the trauma, if possible, address the main issue first--the cause--please seek professional counselling. Get well and keep safe!
