My mother had a stroke about 4 years ago, shortly after my step-father died of cancer...she was heart-broken. I have 1 brother and two sisters. My brother swore to my step-father on his death bed that he would watch take care of our mother. When she had the stroke, my brother and his wife (a nurse) decided to take care of her. We other 3 thought this was very brave and commendible, and had a lot of respect for their decision. Well, in the past three years, they have gotten Durable Power of Attorney, Medical Power of Attorney, had her house Quit Claimed into their name, emptied all bank accounts, disconnected the phone (they have cell phones now which we don;t know the numbers) and my mother has bruises on her arms and hands where her has been pinched by my sister-in-law (the nurse). also, she says my sister-in-law slaps her frequently. They demand a 24 hour notice when we take my mother, and also demand a schedule of everything we plan to do with her. I am so afraid for her well-being.

IF you don't stop sitting around being horrified, this is going to be a self-cancelling problem. Go rescue your mother...together with your other sibling, if possible, but alone if necessary. You may or may not be able to get the legalities undone, but you can definitely step in and challenge the physical care and conditions your mother is enduring. YOur mother....your mother. I can't believe we're even having this conversation, go save your mother! Now.

contact the adult protective services. It sounds to me like they are trying to hold her prisoner and are taking away everything she knows. Why do they want a 24 hour notice? They have no right to demand a schedule of everything you plan to do.

you need to report this to the social services dept where she lives. And in no way do you need to give notice to see your mom. If you take her one day, take her to the hospital to be checked out and report to the authorities. You will need to make plans for her to go elsewhere as I am sure that her going back will make matters worse. This is a very dangerous situation and needs to be acted on fast.

First of all, get on the phone NOW and call the police. Then, call social services and report what you know. This should not be going on. I hope your mom can talk and tell the cops what is going on. They will take her out of there. Please, hurry. Don't let this poor woman suffer one more minute. They have already robbed her blind. Don't let them kill her, too.

Take your mother to a doctor, preferably one that deals with the elderly. Explain to the doctor what is happening to her. He may be able to refer you to one of many numerous organizations that deal with elderly abuse. Good luck. Please hurry...she REALLY needs to get out of the house she's in, before she gets seriously hurt.

Your local social services should be able to get you in contact with the correct officials to help you with this if they do not handle it themselves. Then you need to kick your brothers sorry behind!
