For something like squirrels I prefer .17 HMR. They shoot a little flatter and longer then a .22 lr. I also like .223 but it costs a little more and is a heck of a lot louder. So my vote is .17 HMR, not too loud plenty of pop for small varmint, and pretty cheap.

i've got continually loved my Ruger M77 in 7mm magazine. I used it for antelope, deer, and elk. My former spouse, an ole' ranch gal, used no longer something yet an previous Remington Mohawk in .243. She shot greater deer and antelope with that concern then I did with my greater helpful rifle. I certainly have a Howa 1500 in 22-250 for my prairie canine searching. this is a heavy barreled, thumb hollow stocked rifle. Quiet precise. besides the undeniable fact that, if i grew to become into contained available for a varmint rifle now, i could take a severe investigate the Savage style 12 series of rifles (i could stay with the 22-250 cal.) i think of you may get each and every of the accuracy and reliability from the Savage which you may get from the Tikka, yet for plenty much less money.

I shoot .17HMR for smaller Varmints (Prarie Dogs,Groundhogs) and I admit I have shot more than a few Coyotes with it too..Quite successfully.. If I know that I'm only going after only Coyotes and nothing else than I prefer a .223.
Squirrels and Rabbits get nailed with a good old fashioned .22 LR (Tricked out Ruger 10-22)

I prefer a 22 caliber. That would include a .222, .223, 22-250 or even a .22 LR or 22 Mag.

i like my grandparents .22 mag for groundhog. it gets the job done, and i don't care if the varmint is blown to pieces, just as long as its dead. as for coyote, i like the .223, or a .22/250 both shoot 55 grain bullets that move extremely fast and carry their energy for 400 yards.
groundhog and coyote are the only thing i have to worry about, cause there aren't any fox around my house.
and not be mean to Aaron, but rabbit and squirrel aren't varmints, but the .22 LR does work good for rabbit/squirrel.

For most varmints the .22Lr is a good choice, for longer shot i have a Ruger mini 30 ranch rifle in 7.63x39 with a nice 3x9 scope

Depends on the varmint and how I'm hunting. Long range woodchuck (groundhog) I like a .264 mag. It is fast and level shooting 200 to 300 yard shots are more than make-able. Squirrels I like a .22. Same for fox, opossum, barn rats, raccoons and the like. For rabbits a 16 ga shot gun using #9 shot and my dog. Coyotes and bob cats I like the trusty Winchester 30-30.

I personally like the good 'ol .22-250 Rem. Anything from groundhogs to coyotes, or maybe even deer if you are an expert marksman ( though I don't reccommend you shoot a deer with it ). Plus, it is very fast, and can reach out there a good bit.
