Said it had something to do with the Hebrew alphabet...does anybody know what he meant?

It's the hand symbol used by kohanim during the Priestly Blessing. The hands are in the shape of the Hebrew letter "shin".

It's true, it comes from the Kohane Blessing that's recited once a year--except there it's two hands to resemble the letter shin, which represents a name of G-d.
