Yes - You are absolutely correct. It is the Kamakhya temple at Guwahati in Assam.

One of the best known temple of Guwahati is Kamakhya, situated on Nilachal Hill, eight km west of the city. This temple honour the Mother Goddess Kamakhya, the essence of female energy. It is one of the 108 Shakti Peethas of Goddess Durga. Legend has it that Kamakhya came into existence when Lord Shiva was carrying the corpse of his wife Sati, and her "yoni" (female genitalia) fell to the ground at the spot where the temple now stands. The temple is a natural cave with a spring. Down a flight of steps to the bowel of earth, is located a dark, mysterious chamber. Here, draped with a silk sari and covered with flowers, is kept the "matra yoni".

The Temple was rebuilt in 1665 after being destroyed by Muslim invaders, but its origins are much older than that. It was probably an ancient Khasi sacrificial site, sacrifices are still very much part of worshiping here. Group of devotees arrive each morning with goats to offer to Shakti.

Here, Durga Puja is celebrated annually during Navaratri in the month of September- October. It is a three day festival attracting several visitors. A unique festival observed here is the Ambuvaci (Ameti) fertility festival wherein it is believed that the Goddess (mother Earth) undergoes her menstrual period.

There is no vulgarity and it is perfectly in order and a fact too. -

It is Kamakya Temple in Assam India
( Heard of Kasiranga Sanctuary and double horned Rhinos?)
It Is a legendary temple and the story goes like this
Shiva was insulted in a great 'Homa ' conducted by his father in Law.Daksha and Siva's consort Parvathi who tok him there by force felt humiliated and therefore committed suicide by jumping into the fire.
Siva carried her dead body all over the world showing unending love or one's wife and parts of the body kept falling at different places, after getting decayed(There is anther story of other Gods coming and persuading to discard the dead body demonstrating the universal truth of death is the ultimate truth and physical bodies have to perish one day)
At kamakya the pieces that fell down were, as you say the sex organs
The legends are basically demonstrative sories to bring out great principles like total and unconditional love for his wife even when the body has decayed !
Many Hindu stories are based on some great ideas and principle ,go by that and not the narrative stories

Dear Snehil, As per my knowledge Durga is another face of Parvati. Durga/Parvati is goddess of Power. If you have power than Lakshmi in your pocket. If you have lakshmi in your pocket than there are many intelligent people available for your kind service. Power is the most important thing in this world, In other word you may consider English(U.K.) have laksmi Indian have Sarswati (Knowledge) But America have power. Every country become like America. I think your confusion is now clear Pray for power - Durga.

There is no vulgarity about it, It is the fact of life, and it is considered that sex is the most powerful energy in the body, because its the life giving energy, and since it brings life into the world it is considered a responsible and sacred act, It is believed that God is the one who creates, hence an act of creation is sacred. Hence Art in india is sacred, because it is something that you creat, it is an expression of the soul, hence art in India is linked with Religion, dance, poetry, singing, painting, sculpture and any thing related to creation is sacred. It has given a different meaning in todays life because of various factors.

Your info is possibly correct.

Right to the tourist office in Delhi and get more details on this "Ambubasi festival". They should have correct address or general location.

Such festival last for 1 month or more and they have group of villages participating in the events.

Tourism site may have more info also. Unless I am mistaken it is held in Nasik area. Maharashtra state.

Canary caves near Bombay GhoreGam or Ghoregoan Station on Western R has few caves with carvings and people go to receive fertility blessings, of "Goddess Parvati".

Elephanta caves also near Bombay on Elephanta Island, (have to take water taxi or ferry).

Ajanta and Elora cave are the biggest and may be of interest to you, base on your profile.
