where someone is obviously having a tough time, with snide remarks? I think prayer has the same effect as crossing your fingers, but if it gives these people peace or hope, why do some of us feel it necessary to mock them? I'm a smartass too, but there's a difference between being cruel and joking.

What say you?

Alia, Church Music Girl and Laptop Jesus actually get it. I don't think prayer works either, but I would never use that to justify mocking somone who is hurting, or trying to help in their own way. Just because we don't believe in God doesn't mean we can't behave morally, as Laptop Jesus points out.

I think it's horrible too. We can be polite and have respect for people who are having a bad time. I never respond cruelly to people who are in that kind of situation. Those who do give whatever their religion is, or non religion, a bad name. We CAN have morality without god and we need to demonstrate that by being kind to others - even on here.

I'm tired of the cruelty displayed by my fellow "atheists". Can you tell?

People respond to questions asking for prayers because there is goodness in each of us. And prayer is actually connecting with God!

I have witnessed people getting healed because of prayers from friends and others who know what compassion is all about.

For those who mock people who pray for others, I hope you will not reach a point in your life when you'd feel alone and helpless. When this time comes, don't hesitate to ask for prayers. The world is full of kind and compassionate people.

Well - maybe it's so some of the smart *** people - who are not quite as bad as the others - will get to experience compassion.

I don't believe that there is a "big Daddy in the sky" who, when asked for stuff - decides who will get what - and who is deserving of what. But prayer DOES work - because if you are praying for somebody - it is a loving gesture. And knowing that somebody is showing you love - is very healing. Thus - prayer works.

Namaste!

Many do not believe in the power of prayer or in God, when someone ask for prayer you may be the one that god responds to . At least they believe in prayer, now for the mockers, look how they mocked Jesus and still do to this day.

Many reasons:

Because they don't believe in the power of prayer.

They feel the need to belittle others to make themselves feel better.

If they cannot feel it, see it hear it, they don't believe it. No or little faith in ANYTHING. Seemingly lost souls that cry out to be seen and heard.

To get attention.

My take on it if you cannot CONTRIBUTE, do not respond. I feel it is against the guidelines anyway, but does anyone report them when these snide remarks are made?

It is one thing to offer a legitimate answer or opinion, but another to flame someone.

Just say no and skip the question. Do us all a favor.

Unfortunately, I would guess that some people just cannot resist putting others down, mocking them, etc. This makes me wonder if, indeed, they don't have God-shaped holes in their lives which have somehow become filled up with junk!

Personally, in my 67+ years, I *have* seen prayer work; but if you're content with just crossing your fingers, I say have at it!

God bless you! I can't cross my fingers for you, friend; but I just said a prayer for you!

I agree, that is why I answer with a prayer, take care and have a blessed day. After reading the question you have used as an example, I find it heartbreaking myself that there are people out there who sincerely only wish evil since there is no excuse for what the do. I pains me to see that even in times of most distress thre are those who have no respect for humanity.

Even though this is not a prayer forum. . . .I think sometimes people just need to reach out to someone or just get their feelings out there. My thought is if you don't want to offer prayer, which is fine, you could at least say a kind word or nothing at all.

I've always kind of thought that, too, but it can be hard to see someone who needs to take action asking for "prayers" which we all know do nothing. The request you link to is not one of those cases, but many of them are. I usually send positive energy anyway (or good advice). Whatever helps, I guess.
