That is a tool that has been around for so many centuries that the exact inventor is unknown. It dates back to the early years of machinery in which wedges and hand carved wooden screws were used to hold machines like olive oil-presses together.

Screws and their screwdrivers as we know them today started in the 18th century when a machine to mass produce them from metal was invented.

Slotted screws are considered by many to be more attractive if they are exposed. The head can be at a lower profile than a Phillips without countersinking. The first screws invented were slotted.
