This happened in the final round. Just have read news accounts, though not too much clarity about his caddie holding a rake on an errant shot, that eventually wound up in the water-hazard,which was not the penalty, and wanted to find out the sequence of events. The penalty,as I understand it, was the rake, since his caddie was holding it,was deemed part of Pavin's equipment, therefore re-dropping,in the bunker with a 2-stroke penalty. I just want to know, what happened? Did Pavin hit his ball, hitting the rake his caddie was holding? or what?

As far as I can tell, he was penalized because his caddie moved the rake. Seems odd that he's penalized for letting a ball roll into the water, but those are the rules.

Anyway, this article explains it better than I could:

According to the article, his caddie moved the rake while the ball was in motion. The caddie had put the rake on the ground, but he then moved it when it looked like the ball would hit it.

Part of rule 24-1 says: "When a ball is in motion, an obstruction that might influence the movement of the ball, other than an attended flagstick or equipment of the players, must not be removed."

The rake is not the "equipment of the players".

maybe his caddie touched the sand with the rake. If Pavin was in the bunker, neither he or the caddie can ground a club or rake in the sand.

he hit into the water, out of the bunker cause the ball rolled back, then his caddie put the rake over behind the bunker the same place his ball rolled in, then the next guy out of the bunker hit and it was rolling into the water but the raked stopped it
