Why is it that we drive on parkways, and park on driveways?

Why do we cook bacon and bake cookies? It's just one of those weird American English things...

I think this was a Steven Wright joke about 20 years ago. It is for the say reason our feet smell and our noses run.<---also Wright's joke too.
In fact the parkway is easy. It is so we can drive through the park, and not over the park's grass....oh wait, that is also why we park in the driveway, which in fact is designed to get us to the garage and get there without the lawn. Puns are cute.

a driveway is the way you go if youre going to drive
a parkway is the way you go if youre going to park
or
you'll have to eventually drive if youre in a drive way
and eventually park if youre on a parkway
