Why should they? What would be the advantage to NY State or the USA? NYC would not want to do so. I think the idea is absurd.

Lol, Vermont was its own country before the United States was a country, some just want to go back to their Republic roots.

New York City would benefit by being its own state in that we send more tax revenue to the State then we get back in services and money from the state, meaning we subsidize other parts of the state. However should this be anything more than a pipe dream the economic implications of having to redraw company charters, corporations, bank and legal notices for a new state would hamper the economy of the city for such a time that it would negate any additional revenue for years to come if not indefinitely.

After the 2004 election there was an article in the New Yorker about what if NY City became an independent country because of how different we are than the rest of the country and especially middle America. While the article was a great fantasy about living our values it was an incredibly wild dream that had more downsides of a practical nature (ie passports to commute from Jersey and CT) that made being a part of NY State seem not so bad. New Yorkers of all parts will just continue to "think" two separate NYs: Upstate and the City in perpetuity.

This idea has been floated a few times in history. Firstly, NYC has the population (including long island) to be a solid state. NYC brings in huge amounts of money and if it were not for NYC supporting upstate NY, the rest of the state would of died long ago.

The most logical reason why they could never pull this off is because all of NYC's water comes from upstate NY. Nevermind the legal reforms that would have to happen to make this work, upstate NY could hold NYC ransom if the city did not want to continue to provide life support for an otherwise brain-dead, hick state.

I read somewhere that the idea's creator wanted to name NYC "Gotham" if it were to become a state. I think it would be great to be a state because this city is the only thing keeping New York state alive and yet it is looked upon with disdain by all the country rednecks in upstate who make decisions in Albany about matters that they have no clue about.NYS would decay (further) and die if NYC seceeded and i think this is most likely reason why it will never happen

Yes. New York City is so different from most of the rest of the state and Upstate and the City have different needs. The city would be better able to handle its own money, to allocate it to public transportation (which the state government has failed to do) and other things the city needs.

I think it should, but it will never happen. NYC is nothing like the rest of the state--it makes absolutely no sense that someone from upstate has any say in Albany about what goes on in the city.

Without NYC, New York State would be just another farm state.

it could be greater useful for the city (much less taxes leeched by potential of the state), and worse for the state. a million-2. Mayor's workplace will become the capital, and the capitol. 3. No, financial gadget of NYC and US will proceed to be because it incredibly is 4. probable no longer. in any different case they could have accomplished it already.

I cant see upstate decaying if they seperated from that sinking shithole. We can charge those liberals an arm and a leg for OUR water, id rather not waste it on them tho since hoepfully they will be underwater befor i die and becomes the worlds most expensive fish ecosystem. Also, sepperating from the city would most likely lower our ridiculously high tax rates due to the city.

Federal and State law would prohibit that from ever happening But if you combined The 5 NYC counties and the 2 LI counties into one state ,the resulting state would have a population of around 12,000,000 souls and would instantly be the wealthiest state in the US.
The reason for doing it would be to insure the continuation of representative government in America. It makes absolutley no sense to have upstate farmers making policy and money decisions for downstate urban and suburbanites.

Why? Because its over populated or something??? It's only a city.... that is like asking should miami become a state. Here is a better question. Should Puerto Rico become the 51st state?

It may not be technically it's own state, but New Yorkers consider that there are in fact, already two N.Y.'s.The city and the rest of the state.

Good question since it has become so hugh by now. Guess a "own" state wouldn't hurt especially for the inhabitants.
