Been fishing for 30 years. Mono line is obsolete if you're fishing fresh water. Braided line is the best. I used to have loads of problems with backlash and my line getting twisted up all of the time.
Once I tried Berkley's Gorilla Tough, I haven't had a problem since and I doubt I'll need another line in my lifetime.

Spiderwire and Fireline (made by Berkley) are superbraid lines not the traditional mono-filament lines. They have benefits and drawbacks. They are very tough and strong and do not stretch. Depends on the type of fishing you are doing when you select a line. All in all the quality of most lines is very good these days. You have choices to match the type of fishing you are doing and your line. There is monofiliment (traditional line) Super braid lines (strong/no stretch) and Fluorocarbon ( qualities of both ). Then you have the diameter of the line (2lb.-80lb test). For all round general fishing you may select a 8lb-12lb. Berkley Trilene XL monofilament line.

Berkley Big Game and P-Line are the two monos that I use. Not a fan of braid but their are apps where they can be useful, I guess. If your having trouble with your line memory, I started using something called "Reel Magic" that will decrease the memory and keep from back lashing so bad. Comes in a spray can and you can get it at most Wal-Marts or hunting/fishing stores. Braids are O.K. but if you see one fray, RETIE. Braids may pull out a truck but one little fray anywhere from a rock, dock, etc..... Say goodbye

Let's see, outside of the conventional brands and ones already mentioned you've got Gamma, Seaguar, Sugoi, Toray, Yozuri, Maxima, Izorline, Triple Fish, & Vicious. Most of these are either Japanese or German made and at the top of the price range. I use P-Line and Gamma mono's and full flouro's. I personally can't stand braid.

I am not affiliated with Backwaters at all, I just do a lot of business with them and they carry all the above mentioned lines, that I use.
EDIT:
Fishing Line is just like rods, reels, cars, trucks, and women all are personal preferences and what one will love or like another will dislike for some reason.
Best thing I can tell you is try different lines till you find the one you like. Read up on the new line technology and then try and make a educated guess LOL.

If you are bottom fishing, Ande line is the best. If you are using lures, Trilene. As far as Power Pro, I've seen it in action, and have been quite impressed.
