That would mean the wardens would have to hire...
1. Janitors
2. Laundry people
3. Cooks
4. Plumbing people
No revenue would come in from any other job such as field work, telemarketing, making clothing, washing & maintaining vehicles etc etc etc.
If all prisoners QUIT doing anything and just sat there, would prisons lose all financing thus having to release all but the haneous criminals that taxpayers are willing to really PAY to keep locked up?

I don't think some of you understand the concept of prison. The wardens have budgets. IF the prisoners are not working because NOBODY can make them work, then they will have to hire a tremendous amount of staff.
This would be an enormous amount of money to the prison. They simply could not afford it. Think of EVERY job the prisoners do to keep the prison running. Now think of the wardens having to hire people with real $$$ to do the jobs.

Also, it is required for prisons to give prisoners a fairly clean and decent place under human rights. So it's not like they would get away with them rotting in their cells.

No, taxpayers would start insisting on what should have been done a long time ago. Which is to stop giving prisoners so many perks. It's a punishment, not a Holiday Inn. Before most people would want to see prisoners, even less heinous criminals, out on the street, we'd want to see costs cuts. Shut their cable off and take away the TVs and sell them,, whatever benefits that could be cut would be cut. If an honest person in our society can't afford something, then prisoners certainly shouldn't have it either. Frankly as someone said above, the prisoners would crack before the public would on this issue.
It's a punishment, as far as I am concerned they don't have a choice. Quitting is something you can do when you have control over your own life, when you break a law bad enough to go to prison, you are giving up your rights. Put them on a chain gang and let them pick up trash by the side of the road for all I care. They took away from society, then need to repay their debt.

If that did happen, the only thing the prison would hire outside help for is to fix, clean for the warden and staff. The inmates would just do without. They wouldn't have clean clothes, showers, or places to go potty. They would get bread and water, until they realized if they worked, they would eat a little better. Plus, they would go crazy sitting in their cell for 23 hours of the day, with nothing to do. Working is a privilege in prison. So basically, the prisoners would live in filth and stink, and they would be the ones that put up with it. The guards would wear protective masks, and other clothes, but that is about it.

There are prisons now where the prisoners dont work. Some are only allowed out of their cell for 1 hour a day. I dont think most would object to work if it gets them out of the cell. If they quit as stated then they would not have clean clothes or food cooked and served to them. They would soon realize they can and should work.

Like the person above said. The jails should just go into lock down and it would be much harder on the prisoners then the admin.
Prisoners have no power in prison.

from a County point of view, jail work is a voluntary option...most I know of are more than willing to come out for a few hours each day...and with working comes the added benefits associated with the department where they are being utilized, such as better food (cooks), better uniforms (laundry), more access to the phones (trusties), and more visits (one and all)...and with work comes an increase in "good-time" credits for early release, or for the really lucky ones, remaining in County lock-up for an extended period of time instead of being transferred to a State Penitentiary..!!

no the prisoners wouldnt get released.....but it sure could put the state in a bind, the trickle down affect. thats why they pay them .25 an hr to try and avoid this. We managed to do just that, for about a month, and were there pissed off people all over the state........from the Governor, on down.........

No, then the prisoners would get to sit in their cells 23 hours a day, the prison would remove all radios, tvs etc. I bet the prisoners would crack long before the prison system would.

I think that this sort of work for prisoners in entertaining. I mean compared to sitting in your cell or walking around a 10m square yard. It gives you something to do - instead of killing people.

No they would not have to release them! Yes inmates are required (depending on what jail, what state, what level of jail) to work in some fashion they do not just sit around all day. They are required to attempt to rehabilitate themselves so when they are released they make a better life for themselves. (Doesnt work all of the time)
