The immediate Causes of World War II are generally held to be the German invasion of Poland, and the Japanese attacks on China, the United States, and the British and Dutch colonies. In each of these situations, the attacks were the result of a decision made by authoritarian ruling elites in Germany and Japan. World War II started after these aggressive actions were met with an official declaration of war or armed resistance.
It could be said that, as a result of the Great Depression in the early 1930's many nations and their peoples moved toward militaristic dictatorships as a way of coping with the poor economy. This, more than any other reason, can account for the rise in popularity of the Nazi party in Germany.
Hitler was appointed chancellor on January 30, 1933.
Prior to the depression, American financiers had invested heavily in rebuilding Germany after World War One. With the stock market crash, investment by America in Germany dried up.
In Japan, the invasion of China by the emperor's army, set off the second Sino-Japanese war. The incident that started this war in 1937 was known as the Marco Polo bridge incident.

WW1 did. Germany was beat down so bad, and the reparations they had to pay were bankrupting the country. Hitler capitalized on this to rally the German people behind invading the rest of Europe.

I think it was economic sanctions levied against Germany at the Treaty of Versailles. The unfair conditions brought economic ruin to Germany, so they needed a strong, powerful leader to reestablish their world position in the global market.
If they weren't "punished," Hitler would never have been given an opportunity to ascend to power.
