people think that im rich because i ski, but im really not, im one of the poorest kids in my school! the only reason y we can afford it ski is because my grandparents have a lot of skis and we use thoes, and then they have a house in colorado, and they get a bunch of free lift tickets because they work in this soup place at the top of the mountain.

so of i told you that i ski would you automatically think that im rich?

No, I ski and I'm not rich. I don't get free lift tickets or equipment. But skiing is a very expensive sport, lift tickets going over $50 at the big mountains and a full set of good equipment going for $800-1000+. Not to mention that equipment doesn't last forever. But it's all worth it...

The most expensive part of skiing is the equipment and the clothing. I do not think it is that expensive at say $70.00 per day at the best places in America. There are a lot of other sports that cost more to play, golf ofr instance. I also think that it is a very good physical activity. Nice scenery also including the snow bunnies.
I have been skiing for 10 years now and I would love to ski year round if I could afford the air fair to South America.

Nope. I would think you are awesome.

Skiing is what you want it to be. I spent much of my youth on pass down equipment, and went through a roll of duck tape or two.

People that don't ski perceive it to be a sport for the rich. I'm guessing they get this from non-skiing parents. "Mom, dad, can we go skiing?"

"No, Suzy, that is for rich, white kids. Didn't you see that movie?"

Hollywood dictates the answers for those that have no experience with it.

NO, I wouldn't think that at all. My folk's weren't well off and I started skiing at about your age. I started on a pair of hickory skis that someone had given me. I saved my money then bought a better set.
I'm still not wealthy but still ski, although less than before because it is becoming costly.

So NO, I don't think you are rich!

It can be costly. I live near Heavenly Valley and a lift ticket is over $70. now. In addition, if you want lunch...it costs around $11. or more for a cheeseburger and drink. Lockers are expensive, too.

For a person without their own equipment it is even more expensive. Rentals are expensive and aren't usually that good.

You would have to be pretty rich to go to a 5-star resort like that and pay full price all the time for lifts and rentals.

I bought my equipment used from the classified ads and I get a season pass. The pass pays for itself if you go more than a few times. I also bring a Camelback backpack for my lunch.

Skiing is definietly NOT for just the rich. Staying slopeside at a major resort and having brand new skis and gear every year IS for the rich.

I am a classical dirt-bag skier..and I'm getting BETTER at being a dirt-bag every year. I rarely pay to ski...let alone pay FOOL price. (Yes I misspelled that on purpose!)

I started skiing when I was 12 and I put up with rental skis and boots for four years...why? Because our local mountian had group rates for night skiing that never cost more than $14/night for a lift-ticket & rentals. I skied at least 12 nights a year and maybe a few weekends when we had school or scout group trips. Those never cost more than $23.

I finally got my own skis when I was 16 and beat the living snot out of them until I was 21. When I wasn't dropping only $10 a night to ski I was hauling those bad boys into the woods and laying down tracks on mountains without ski lifts.

I have to admit that some of the equipment I own has come from "questionable" sources. I don't ask where it comes from and the slightly shady guys who sold it to me admit nothing.
The rest of my stuff (and for the past 10 years) has come from closeout sales, old stock, ebay, ex-demo gear, and industry discounts and deals.

Ski areas are always trying to make a buck off the suckers. Those with slightly tighter wallets and a little know-how get around paying at all...or at least paying very little.

Here's some tips to ski cheap or free.

1. Volunteer with a mountain. There are rules to follow, like at Killington a Mountain Ambassador has to put in 20 days (or close to it) but you get a season pass out of the deal. Most mountians have some kind of program like that.

2. Ski Patrol...get certified and you can ski just about anywhere for free. There are some strings attached..but all of my patroller friends NEVER pay for lift tix.

3. Get an industry job. Working at a ski shop, ski mountain, or travel agency will get you MAD deals.

4. Look for deals. They are out there and buried on lost pages of websites. You will have to put some time in at the computer...but they are there.

5. Ski coupons. Tons of places have Buy-one-get-one-free deals.

6. A lot of eastern resorts have deals for specific geographic locations. I don't know if this goes for CA and CO, but in VT there are "Vermonter" days, "Jersey" days, "PA" days..etc. With a VT drivers license in hand I can usually snag at least 50% off lift tickets. Resorts usually publish this stuff on their websites.

7. Learn how to ski in the Backcountry. Telemark or Alpine Touring Skis will allow you to ski anywhere for nothing but the cost of sweat and worked muscles.
